Age and Source Verification is a Key to Many Value Added Opportunities in Today's Beef Industry

There are so many choices and oppportunities for beef cattle producers to cash in on various value added schemes. Doug McKinney's job with OSU Extension is to try to help those producers in sorting out the possibilities and figure out what will work for their cattle herd.
We talked this past week with Doug McKinney after he spoke to the Central Oklahoma Cattle Conference this past week- and he emphasized that one of the keys to value added at the cow calf level is to step up and get your paperwork in order to have your cattle verified for source and age. He points out that ONLY the Cow Calf Operator can accomplish this key component to many of the Value Added Opportunities producers can take advantage of. McKinney says that the export marketplace is especially in need of source and age verified cattle- and that while there are never any guarantees about getting a premium- those producers who pass along the equivalent of a birth certificate for their animals as they move into the beef pipeline from their place of birth on the ranch are very likely to get paid for taking the time to do this verification.
