Beef Producers Continue to Have Credibility with Consumers

Lucinda Williams, Chairman of the Cattlemen's Beef Board, believes that cattle producers continue to be a credible voice for the beef cattle industry. Some studies have suggested that the overall credibility of the industry has suffered because of the multiple food safety issues that have surfaced in recent months.
Williams talked with us at the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Convention this past week in Kansas City. She defends cattle producers and says that consumers need to understand that she wants a safe beef product for her family to enjoy just as much as the consumer wants a safe product for their family.
She says that Beef Checkoff programs help with consumer education about handling products like ground beef safely. But she adds that ultimately consumers have to step up and accept some of the responsibility of making sure they handle and cook ground beef correctly.
Meanwhile, on today's Beef Buzz, we also report on a call by Congresswoman Rosa Delauro, Chairman of the House Ag Appropriations Subcommittee, for Congressional investigation into the scientific merits of the beef testing protocol known as "N-60."
This test is the primary test used to check for E-coli in ground beef and other food products.
