Top Steer at Tulsa Junior Livestock Show Fetches $33,000

The Premium sale of the top market animals that were shown at the 2008 Tulsa State Fair was held on Friday at midday- and early tallies indicate that just over $500,000 was spent supporting these young people from all over the state of Oklahoma.
The first animal to sell in 2008 was the Grand Champion Steer- you can see him being held by his owner, Jordan Jensen of the El Reno FFA. The 1320 pound Champion Crossbred sold for $33,000. Jordan's Granddad showed the Grand Champion Steer at the Tulsa Fair 53 years ago- and the buyer of this animal here in 2008 was banker L.C. Neel of Locust Grove. Neel bought the Grand Champion Steer for the 13th time with the purchase of this year's top animal- and he bought his first Grand Champion Steer back in 1972- for $2600.00. Neel donated the steer after the sale to the Tulsa Boys Home.
The Reserve Grand Champion Steer sold as the sixth animal in the ring- and brought more than any other animal sold during the premium sale except for the Grand Champion Steer. The Reserve Grand Steer was shown by Bailey Buck of the Madill FFA- and was sold to Mike and Phyllis Raines for $18,500.
As the sale began, a special tribute was paid to Everett Sallee, who passed away earlier this year, for his years and years of service to this annual sale. Sallee was known to many in Oklahoma livestock circles as the longstanding owner of the New Tulsa Stockyards.
We have an audio overview of the selling of the steer and comments from LC Neel later today. AND, we will be posting stories of the other Grand Champions later on Saturday here on the OklahomaFarmReport.Com
