American Farmers & Ranchers State Speech Winners Claim State Championships- Led by Ashton Mese of Kingfisher The 2009 American Farmers & Ranchers State Speech Contest wrapped up with the Finals on Saturday on campus at Oklahoma State University. After five district contests, up to two contestants per category in each age division advanced to Stillwater for the right to compete for Savings Bonds on Saturday. AFR awarded the winners with just over $13,000 in prizes.

We talked with Terry Detrick, President of the AFR, about the contest just before the winners were announced on Saturday- as well as getting an update on the policy process now underway by the grass roots organization. Click on the Listen Bar below to hear that conversation.

The final award of the day was for Tournament of Champions, with state winners from last year vying for the top title. Senior Ashton Mese of Kingfisher was the winner, which made her a five time state champion in the 2009 contest, which was the 65th annual competition that has been hosted over the years by the Oklahoma Farmers Union and now the AFR.
