NCBA President Steve Fogelsong to USDA- Pull the Rule!
Fri, 27 Aug 2010 5:32:56 CDT
The National Cattlemen's Beef Association teamed up with the National Pork Producers Council to host a forum on the eve of the DOJ-USDA workshop on competition in the livestock industry. The workshop will be taking place all day today in Ft. Collins, Colorado on the campus of Colorado State University.
The focus of the forum held Thursday evening by the two groups was the so called GIPSA rule on livestock markets. These groups are strongly opposed to the rule- and the room where their forum was held was filled with people wearing stickers that say "Pull the Rule."
One of those wearing this sticker was Steve Fogelsong, President of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Fogelsong says that there are more issues that should be addressed in the Competition Workshop than the GIPSA rule- but it appears that both sides want to make this event a referendum on whether it should be implemented or not.
Fogelsong is in the camp that wants the rule either dropped or extensively reworked- he says that as he has read the rule, he sees good things in it- but the key issue of lowering the standard for litigation if a producer decides that a neighbor of his is getting a better deal for his livestock makes the overall proposal unworkable.
