Mon, 06 May 2019 14:52:24 CDT

Checking in on the Beef Checkoff - OK Leading the Nation in the Masters of Beef Advocacy Program In this week’s edition of Checking In on the Beef Checkoff - Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays is joined by Heather Buckmaster, executive director of the Oklahoma Beef Council. During their visit, Buckmaster talked about the OBC’s recent involvement with the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and its partnership with the Oklahoma FFA Association in developing the next generation of beef advocates. During the Recent Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, the Oklahoma Beef Council interacted with participants at this event which attracts nearly 75,000 people. Buckmaster remarked that this venue was the perfect opportunity to share beef recipes and nutritional information with a key segment of food and health involved consumers. It was also a chance to promote Team Beef, a Checkoff sponsored group of active beef consumers who publicly show their support for the beef industry during physical endurance events like the Marathon.

In addition, the OBC recently participated in the Oklahoma FFA State Convention, presenting this year’s grand prize for its Master’s of Beef Advocacy Program. According to Buckmaster, the OBC gave away $6,000 for the Oklahoma FFA’s collective efforts in not only meeting its goal to get 750 students to obtain their MBA certification, but surpassing it. In total, Buckmaster says more than 1,000 students actually qualified - making Oklahoma the leading state in the nation. The MBA program is also a Checkoff funded program, designed to equip beef producers, industry allies and our youth with the information they need to be advocates for the beef industry.

“It’s been a wonderful way to educate that next generation of youth about how to speak about beef with consumers and their peers,” Buckmaster said. “It’s so important that we educate our youth on how to be advocates for our industry.”
