Mon, 14 Oct 2019 22:33:03 CDT
In this week’s edition of Checking In on the Beef Checkoff – Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays is joined by Heather Buckmaster, executive director of the Oklahoma Beef Council. During their visit, Buckmaster talked about the Checkoff’s efforts to promote its sustainability message to consumers and stakeholders. Listen to Buckmaster and Hays full conversation by clicking or tapping the LISTEN BAR below at the bottom of the page.
“Beef sustainability is a constant topic the Beef Checkoff works to address on a state, national and international level,” Buckmaster said.
According to her, through multiple presentations, the Checkoff has corrected misinformation and myths about the beef industry – including EPA’s recent claim that cattle production accounts for 3.3 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in the US. While the intent in that is to make it seem as though beef production is significantly harmful to the environment, the truth is quite the opposite. Buckmaster refutes that the beef industry’s carbon footprint is actually minimal compared to other industries.
On a national level, the Checkoff has participated in the Future of Food Summit in New York City, sharing information with leading minds in the foods industry. Internationally, too, that same information is being spread to thought leaders thanks to the efforts of the Beef Checkoff.
