Latest Road to Rural Prosperity Features OSU's Dr. Derrell Peel On his Journey from Big Sky Country to Oklahoma
|
From Big Sky Country to Oklahoma- Dr. Derrell Peel has watched the cattle and beef markets for decades- and we chat about it on this Road to Rural Prosperity about the changes he was seen in the beef cattle marketplace since he first arrived in Stillwater.
Holder of the Charles A. Breedlove Endowed Professorship in Agribusiness, Peel joined the OSU faculty in 1989 as OSU Cooperative Extension livestock marketing specialist, a position he still fills today and for which he has received significant renown from both industry and academia.
Today's Road to Rural Prosperity is powered by the Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma- the voice of Oklahoma oil and natural gas.

NCBA Postpones 2021 Convention Until August But Keeps Location The Same
|
The 2021 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show has been postponed until August due to COVID-19 restrictions. Colin Woodall, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, talked with me about that decision to move the meeting from early in the year to August 10-12.
The venue will not change so the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville remains the host site.
It’s something we’ve giving a lot of consideration to and unfortunately the local restrictions on size of gatherings are not being lifted, Woodall said.
The restriction limits are 500 people and a normal attendance for the NCBA event is 8-9,000 people.
Plus the corporate policies associated with some of the large trade show exhibitors would prevent them from attending, Woodall said.
We didn’t want to go virtual and we sure didn’t want to cancel, Woodall said, so when we had the opportunity to move to August was our best opportunity.

AFBF Statement on the National Vote Count
|
The following statement may be attributed to American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall:
“A record number of Americans turned out to fulfill their civic duty and cast their ballots. We hold the right to vote as the foundation of our democracy. Behind each vote is a voice, and it is crucial that we all be heard this election. We encourage Americans to remain patient throughout the ballot counting process and join together to support those elected to lead this great nation.
“The issues facing agriculture and rural America are larger than political parties. We need to build on the advancements toward regulatory reform and strengthen the farm bill. We must continue to expand trade and improve market access so farmers can focus on competing in a fair marketplace. The time has come to complete the broadband grid and end the disadvantages faced by farms, families and communities without access.

President-Elect Biden Must Bring Real Climate Action, Beginning with Fracking Ban on Federal Lands
|
Editor's note- AND so it begins- we have received several releases on Friday and over the weekend that reflect the demands that will be on Joe Biden from activist groups- especially when it comes to environmental issues- this was one of the first.
With his apparent victory over Donald Trump, President-elect Joe Biden has an opportunity to implement a drastically different approach to issues of climate change and environmental protection -- especially those involving federal policy on fossil fuel extraction, and rampant air and water pollution. In response, Food & Water Action Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:
“We are of course deeply relieved and encouraged by Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump. Trump represents an unprecedented threat to public health, climate stability and a livable future on Earth - not to mention a grave threat to our democracy.
“Joe Biden has an opportunity to right the ship and take the decisive action necessary to tackle our climate crisis with the urgency it requires. He must start by immediately banning fracking on federal lands, as he has promised. Fracking poses an unacceptable risk to public health and it enables our perilous addiction to fossil fuels. A real transition to a clean energy future can and must begin with a halt to new fracking - first on federal lands, and everywhere else soon after.

University of Tennessee's Ag Policy Analysis Center Urges Return of COOL
|
In a recently published "Policy Pennings Column" by Dr. Harwood Schaffer and Dr. Daryll Ray of the University of Tennessee's Agriculture Policy Analysis Center (Center), the authors urged the return of mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL) for beef, pork, and bison.
The Center states that COOL could give consumers information they need to buy products that meet their individual buying preferences and the cost of providing this information would be negligible because the information already exists in the meat supply chain.
The Center explains that the information systems developed within the meat supply chain prior to the 2015 repeal of COOL for beef and pork still remain today but are simply not being used to inform customers about the country of origin of beef and the other meats.
That fact that customers want to know the country of origin of the meat they purchase is supported by the online COOL petition maintained by R-CALF USA. The petition, located at www.demandusabeef.com, has been signed by over 400,000 customers who are asking the President and Congress to pass mandatory COOL for beef, pork and dairy products.
