Oklahoma Drought Conditions See Improvements After Recent Rainfall
|
According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, there are increased odds of below-normal temperatures next week and possibly on Christmas.
According to the latest drought monitor report, in Oklahoma, exceptional drought is down quite a bit from last week at 11.64 percent. Last week’s percentage was 19.88.
Extreme drought or worse is down from last week’s 64.01 percent, now at 57.35 percent.
Severe drought or worse has dropped slightly from last week’s 85.98 to now 83.45.
Moderate drought or worse has also dropped slightly from last week and is now at 90.18 percent. Last week was at 91.21 percent.
Abnormally dry conditions have dropped from last week’s 99.97 percent to 98.45 percent.
According to the 6–10-day precipitation outlook map for Oklahoma, the entire state, aside from the panhandle is leaning below a 33-40 percent chance of precipitation through December 24. The panhandle is sitting at “near normal” probability for receiving some moisture.

Hannah Thompson-Weeman sees Animal Activist Groups Picking Up Speed in 2023
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am back talking with the Animal Agriculture Alliance president and CEO, Hannah Thompson-Weeman, about staying up to date with the movement of animal activist groups.
“We have profiles on nearly 200 or probably more than 200 at this point- different organizations that are targeting animal agriculture in one way or another,” Thompson-Weeman said. “We do monitor those groups extensively, including issuing reports from national animal rights conferences. We have issued several of those reports to our members from the past year.”
One major trend from those reports to be mindful of, Thompson-Weeman said, is the focus on legislation.
“Groups are talking about starting at the very local level to get legislation introduced and move that along to set a precedent that they can expand that would really impact our ability to do business,” Thompson-Weeman said.
Additionally, Thompson-Weeman said there is a lot of pressure on restaurant, retail, and food service brands.

Beef Quality Assurance Certification Available During Cattlemen’s Congress
|
When cattlemen and women gather in Oklahoma City for Cattlemen’s Congress, Jan. 1-16, 2023, to showcase and market their elite cattle genetics, they will also have three opportunities to receive their Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification or re-certification and attend a special Commercial Cattlemen’s Luncheon for free. BQA training and certification is common sense cattle management that helps the industry produce better beef while demonstrating its commitment to good animal care.
In the Super Barn Sales Arena at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds, the Oklahoma Beef Council will host three seminars with lunch taught by OSU staff, including two seminars from 11:00 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3 and Tuesday, January 10. On Thursday, January 5, cattle producers can attend a BQA seminar from 10:00 a.m.to 11:30 a.m. All who attend and complete their certification will receive a free ticket to the Commercial Cattlemen’s Luncheon.
According to Heather Buckmaster, executive director for the Oklahoma Beef Council, “This is a wonderful opportunity for cattle producers to achieve their BQA certification, have lunch, visit with their peers, attend a wonderful trade show and see some of the best cattle in the U.S.”

NCGA President, Tom Haag Outlines Corn Industry Highlights and Complements U.S. Corn Genetics
|
Farm Director, KC Sheperd, sat down with the President of the National Corn Growers Association, Tom Haag, and talked about the state of the corn industry in the U.S. and the nation’s corn crop.
The most important thing Haag said he would like to see regarding the 2023 Farm Bill, is to protect crop insurance.
“It is that safety net the American farmer needs in his toolbox in order to keep going,” Haag said.
The dispute on biotech corn exports to Mexico, Haag said, has been a priority for NCGA as far as communicating the importance of avoiding disruption to U.S. corn exports. NCGA has asked the Biden Administration to repeal plans by Mexico to block imports.
Haag also talked about this year’s corn crop in the midst of the drought.
“These genetics we have right now- it is amazing what they do, because we thought we would be using crop insurance this year,” Haag said.

CHS Releases 2022 Sustainability Report
|
CHS, the nation’s leading farmer-owned cooperative, has released the 2022 CHS Sustainability Report, describing the company’s approach to sustainability and highlights of some of its sustainability initiatives.
“CHS is integrating sustainability into our core businesses and creating opportunities for owners and customers,” said President and CEO Jay Debertin. “In 2022, we added dedicated leaders and support resources and formalized our sustainability business function. We also focused on developing the internal governance and processes needed to execute long-term success related to environmental and social factors.”
The actions taken by CHS will help the company reduce impact on the planet, respond to opportunities related to enhanced sustainability and continue to build a better future for the farmers and ranchers who own the cooperative system.
In 2022, CHS added Megan Rock as vice president, sustainability and innovation and chief sustainability officer (CSO). “As we formalize our sustainability function, we will continue to develop our efforts in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) programs through a dedicated climate director and by expanding our innovation team, as technology advancements will play a key role in long-term success for CHS and our owners,” said Rock.

OSU's Kim Anderson Says Lots Impacting Commodity Prices as We Traverse the Final Days of 2022
|
This Week on SUNUP is Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist Kim Anderson. During this week’s edition, Anderson talks about the many things going on in the markets this week, which he says is uncommon for this time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“There is a lot going on this week,” Anderson said. “I think the number one thing that we are paying attention to is we got some moisture. The moisture is not evenly distributed around, but I think we can get some excitement with that.
The dollar declined this week, Anderson said, which is good news for exports.
“Our exports have been a little weak over the last month or so,” Anderson said. “We need those exports to pick up.”
Wheat prices bottomed out, Anderson said, with about $1.25 coming off, putting them below 8 dollars, but they are back above eight dollars now.
Anderson also talked about how Russia and Ukraine have the potential to impact the markets more in the near future.
