Wintering Cattle Through a Drought on a Regenerative Ranch
|
How you graze and supplement cattle during dry spells can have long-lasting economic and ecological effects on your ranch.
Wintering cattle during drought on a regenerative ranching operation may not be as simple as buying more feed and hay.
Each decision producers make can have lasting effects on their operation — both economically and ecologically — according to Clark Roberts, Noble ranch manager. Making a knee-jerk decision about managing your cow herd during drought may affect your ranch’s long-term sustainability.
Instead, Roberts encourages cattlemen and cattlewomen to think long-term when managing their cow herds and keep the larger picture of their land’s management in mind.
“Make sure that whatever you’re doing, you keep your ecological and economic thresholds in mind when managing through drought,” he says. “Focusing on one and not the other can get you into trouble pretty quickly.”

Ag Secretary Blayne Arthur Looks Back on the Birth of Cattlemen’s Congress as Year Three Approaches
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, Blayne Arthur, about the development and growth of Cattlemen’s Congress.
Looking back on the first year of Cattlemen’s Congress (2020), Arthur said there were many moving pieces to make the show come together.
After the cancellation of the National Western Stock Show, the Fort Worth Stock Show, and others, many cattle producers were left with no place to showcase their cattle after plenty of hard work.
Thankfully, Arthur said, the state of Oklahoma has a governor who was supportive of the show and willing to help turn plans into action.
Many individuals came together to offer Cattlemen’s Congress to the livestock industry, Arthur said, and the people of Oklahoma City worked hard to bring it all together in a short time frame to give cattlemen across the United States an option to showcase their genetics.
“It was a pretty monumental task to have that happen, and I don’t know that any of us would have imagined it becoming an annual event,” Arthur said.

U.S Grains Council’s Cary Sifferath Excited about Continued Growth for U.S. Grain Industry
|
At the National Association of Farm Broadcasters convention in Kansas City, Farm Director, KC Sheperd, visited with the Vice President for the U.S. Grains Council, Cary Sifferath.
Sifferath said the U.S. Grains Council is always working to identify where they need to be to develop new frontier markets for today and 10 to 15 years from now.
“We just opened up our new office in New Delhi, India, to cover that South Asia market, and we are quite excited about that,” Sifferath said. “India has been a good market for U.S. ethanol exports already and trying to crack open that India market for other grain, whether corn and sorghum or DDGS.”
Other countries around India, Sifferath said, are also being covered by the office in New Delhi.
Because of drier conditions in many areas of the U.S., Sifferath said many international customers have had to be reassured that the grain they need will be available. Low water levels in rivers such as the Mississippi River, Sifferath said, have also been an issue because a significant amount of grain is moved down those rivers to reach the export market.
Sifferath also talked about what the U.S. Grains Council would like to see in the upcoming farm bill.
“There are two big marketing programs,” Sifferath said. “The Market Access Program, MAP, and the Foreign Market Development, FMD programs within USDA.”

Different Feedlot Dynamics in 2023
|
On Cow-Calf Corner, Oklahoma State University Livestock Market Economist, Dr. Derrell Peel talks about the data in the latest USDA Cattle on Feed Report.
The final USDA Cattle on Feed report for the year shows that feedlot inventories continue to decrease. The December 1 total of cattle in feedlots was 11.673 million head, down 2.6 percent year over year and the third consecutive monthly year over year decrease in 2022 (Figure 1). November placements were down 2.1 percent year over year; a bit larger than expected, but still down for the third consecutive month. Feedlot marketings in November were about as expected, up 1.2 percent year over year.
Drought pushed more cattle into feedlots earlier this year and kept feedlot totals higher for longer. Monthly inventories from February through June of 2022 were not only higher year over year but were at record monthly levels in the cattle on feed data series that began in 1996.

Oklahoma Sow Herd is Tied for Fourth Largest Pork Breeding Herd in US
|
The December Hog and Pigs Report just before Christmas showed a two percent drop in the US total hog herd- all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2022 was 73.1 million head. This was down 2 percent from December 1, 2021, and down 1 percent from September 1, 2022.
Breeding inventory, at 6.15 million head, was up slightly from last year, and up slightly from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 67.0 million head, was down 2 percent from last year, and down 1 percent from last quarter.
That Breeding herd number caught some analysts by surprise- and showed that Oklahoma's sow herd increasing by 7% versus a year ago. The sow herd, as of December first, is now at 490,000 head- making the Oklahoma sow number the fourth largest in the US- tied with Minnesota which had an 11% drop in breeding numbers compared to a a year ago.
The three larger states in numbers of sows include Iowa, North Carolina and Illinois.
Oklahoma's hog industry gives birth to a lot of baby pigs- but will ship many of them once weaned to states that have more abundant feed supplies. Some pigs are finished- most of them for the Seaboard Plant in Guymon.
Total hog numbers in Oklahoma make the state number nine in the US in terms of total hog inventory- the 2.13 million hog herd was up 2% from December 2021.
