Tax Certainty Secured: NCBA’s Kent Bacus on the One Big, Beautiful Law

At the recent Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting in San Diego, Senior farm and ranch broadcaster Ron Hays spoke with Executive Director of Government Affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Kent Bacus. Our Coverage from San Diego is powered by Farm Data Services of Stillwater.

Kent Bacus emphasized the enormous impact of the “one big, beautiful tax law.” Bacus, NCBA’s Executive Director of Government Affairs, explained that this law provides certainty for producers beyond 2025, something that was previously lacking. “We don’t have to worry about expiring provisions at the end of 2025,” he said. This long-term stability allows cattle producers to confidently make decisions regarding succession planning, major capital investments, and other future-facing business moves.

Bacus credited the bill’s passage to both political leadership and the consistent pressure from cattle producers themselves. He praised President Trump and congressional leaders for the speed at which the bill moved, noting, “Tax bills always take a long time to get done the rate of speed at which they moved speaks volumes.”

Dr. Derrell Peel, Less Beef Meets Summer Beef Demand

Dr. Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist, offers his economic analysis of the beef cattle industry as part of the weekly series known as the “Cow Calf Corner,” published electronically by Dr. Peel, Mark Johnson, and Paul Beck. Today, Dr. Peel analyzes recent beef demand.

The summer doldrums between Independence Day and Labor Day usually means slack beef demand. Indeed, the Choice boxed beef cutout dropped from the end of June to a current weekly average of $386.75/cwt., down from the recent high of $394.19/cwt. However, boxed beef prices remain 19.1 percent above this time last year and have averaged 12.6 percent above one year ago each week in the first half of the year.

Higher average boxed beef prices reflect generally strong beef demand coupled with declining beef production, especially in the second quarter of the year. Total beef production is down 1.7 percent year over year through the first half of the year but is down 4.8 percent in the second quarter.

Fall Armyworms Have Arrived in Oklahoma Pastures and Hayfields

Fall armyworms (FAW) are caterpillars that directly damage Bermudagrass and other introduced forage pastures, seedling wheat, soybean and residential lawns. There have been widespread reports of FAW buildups across East Central and Northeast Oklahoma in the first two weeks of July. Current locations exceeding thresholds for control are Pittsburg, McIntosh and Rogers counties.

Female FAW moths lay up to 1000 eggs over several nights on grasses or other plants. Within a few days, the eggs hatch and the caterpillars begin feeding. Caterpillars molt six times before becoming mature, increasing in size after each molt (instars). The first instar is the caterpillar just after it hatches. A second instar is the caterpillar after it has shed its skin for the first time.

A sixth instar has shed its skin five times and will feed, bury itself in the soil, and pupate. The adult moth will emerge from the pupa in two weeks and begin the egg laying process again after a suitable host plant is found. Newly hatched larvae are white, yellow, or light green and darken as they mature. Mature FAW measure 1½ inches long with a body color that ranges from green, to brown to black.

$27.1 Billion for Ag Spending Advanced by Senate Appropriations Committee in 2026

The Senate Committee on Appropriations has approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, to invest in America’s rural communities, support our nation’s farmers and ranchers, keep our food supply secure, and maintain nutritional support for low-income American families.

The measure, which was advanced by a unanimous vote of 27-0, provides $27.1 billion in discretionary funding. Oklahoma is represented on the full Committee by Senator Markwayne Mullin, who also serves as a member of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee.

“This important bill supports our farmers and rural communities, the safety of our food supply, critical federal nutrition programs, and medical research and advancements. This bill also provides much needed investments in rural housing programs to help address severe affordable housing shortage felt in Maine and states across the country,” said Senator Susan Collins, Chair of the Appropriations Committee.

MULLIN IT OVER COLUMN: “How The One Big, Beautiful Bill Sustains And Saves Medicaid”

Today, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) released his latest Mullin It Over column—his second in a series of upcoming op-eds breaking down key policy wins from President Trump’s ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ which was signed into law on July 4th, 2025.

How The One Big, Beautiful Bill Sustains And Saves Medicaid By Senator Markwayne Mullin “In a huge victory for Oklahoma, Congress recently passed President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which, among many wins, will deliver the largest-ever tax cut for working and middle-class families, secure the border, and lower energy costs.

Unfortunately, Washington Democrats who are desperate to change the media narrative after a brutal 2024 election loss have made it their mission to lie about this bill and mislead American families — especially on Medicaid program improvements.
