~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's another
of those in between kinda days on this Friday after New Year's Day. While
we wait for next week to see the reopening of livestock auction markets-
we do have ahead of us a full trading day for our ag futures. The stock
market also trades for the first time in 2009- and the Federal Government
is open for business today. Still, a lot
of folks are off work today- so not a lot to accomplish until the first
full week of the new year which begins Monday.
This email
will be relatively brief- a couple of stories to pass along as well as a
rundown of several of the events that will be happening here early in
2009. | |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our first
podcast of the new year features the Executive Director of the Oklahoma
Pork Council- Roy Lee Lindsey, Jr. It's a wide ranging interview over
several subjects- the challenge of big losses in 2008 in the hog industry-
and whether they will continue in 2009 or not.
We also talked
about animal rights, COOL and the 2009 Oklahoma Legislative session that
begins in a matter of just a few days. The link to our Ag Perspectives
Podcast with Roy Lee is below. In addition,
we invite you to watch our weekly Saturday morning In the Field TV segment
which will feature Roy Lee Lindsey as well. In the Field is our regular
feature seen on the morning news block Saturdays on KWTV News 9 in
Oklahoma City. Click here for our Conversation with Roy Lee

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ San Antonio is
the home of the Beltwide Cotton Conference this coming week, with all
segments of the Cotton industry coming together under the common theme
"Improving Our Farm, Future and World." We have the
link below for more on this annual cotton industry gathering that happens
January five through the eighth. Click here for more on the 2009 National
Beltwide Cotton Conference
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The 2009 Women
in Agriculture conference "Cows, Plows and so much more!" is being planned
for Friday, January 9, 2009. A team of representatives from Garfield and
Grant counties who are dedicated to keeping women in rural Oklahoma
informed about the issues that may affect them locally will be presenting
the conference and honoring an outstanding farm woman from the area
The 2009
conference agenda will include an array of speakers to present breakout
sessions about current issues that are taking place in the area. Just a
few of the sessions include Tradewinds Energy about the wind turbine
project across both counties; Sarah Love with the Oklahoma Carbon
Initiative will be present to talk about carbon sequestration; Larry Peck
with AgYouth Magazine will present a session on goats; JC Hobbs with OSU
extension will present on tax time survival tips and Dr. John Gilliam with
Oklahoma State University has been invited to present a session on cattle
handling. The day will start off with a light hearted, inspirational and
motivational appearance by Sophy. More details
on this conference can be seen on our website's calendar section- and we
have the specific website posting linked below. You can also call Sheri
Nickel at the Garfield County Conservation District at (580)237-7880 or
(580)554-7123. Click here for more on the Women in Ag
Conference Planned for January 9 in Enid

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ American
Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) will hold a Farm Bill informational meeting
at the Agrifest Farm Show that is being held in Enid next weekend. AFR
invites everyone that is interested in learning more about the new Farm
Bill to attend the free meeting on Friday, January 9th at 11:00 a.m. at
the Chisholm Trail Expo Center in Enid, Oklahoma.
The meeting
will include information on the new ACRE program, the new permanent
disaster program, new payment limitations, Country Of Origin Labeling and
other provisions included within the 15 titles of the 2008 Farm Bill. For
more information contact Francie Tolle at (405) 218-5523.
This
informational meeting is similar to meetings already held in Oklahoma City
and Tulsa by the general farm organization.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have
several more events that we will be adding that have been provided to us
for the 2009 calendar by many of you. AND- we have already placed on our
calendar pages a bunch of stuff for the new year- both local and national
events. We invite you
to go to our link below and scan the Calendar for more information on
events that are of interest to you. And, be sure to let us know about the
events of importance happening within your group- we will be delighted to

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No cash cattle
trade occurred through New Year's Eve- so the expectation is that we will
see buyers and sellers come together later today for feedlot trade this
week. We saw Texas/Oklahoma feedlot prices at $86 this past Friday- after
Christmas, and the volume was enough that packers have had adequate
supplies to carry them to this first trading day of 2009.
Here are some
links we will leave in place on an ongoing basis- Click on the name of the
report to go to that link:
