And Now- There's Four Wanting to Be Our Next US Senator- TW Shannon- Come On Down
|
Former Oklahoma House Speaker TW Shannon is hoping that the second time is his charm- as he announced on Thursday afternoon that he will seek the GOP Nomination to fill the four remaining years of the current seat in the US Senate now held by Jim Inhofe.
Shannon ran when the Tom Coburn seat came open- and was defeated by then Congressman James Lankford in a runoff eight years ago.
Shannon went back into the private sector after that face- and has been serving as the CEO of the Chickasaw Community Bank.
Shannon joins a field that already includes 2nd District Congressman Markwayne Mullin, former Inhofe chief of staff Luke Holland and state Sen. Nathan Dahm.
No Democrat or other non-Republican candidate has surfaced.
According to coverage from the Oklahoma City Announcement by the Tulsa World- Shannon gained at least one-high profile endorsement on Thursday — Chickasaw Gov. Bill Anoatubby.
"I support him 100%," said Anoatubby, who attended the announcement. "We're excited about it. He has all the capability and background to do the job."

Top Eight Wheat Varieties Planted in Oklahoma Come From OSU Wheat Breeding Program!
|
Oklahoma State University (OSU) varieties continue to dominate in planted acres of Hard Red Winter Wheat across the state of Oklahoma, according to the March 2022 “Oklahoma Variety Report” from USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.
For the fifth year in a row, the top four leading wheat varieties planted in the state were developed by OSU with another four listed in the top eight. A few changes appeared in the lineup compared to last year with the Doublestop CL Plus variety taking the top spot, moving the standby variety Gallagher into second place.
This year’s continued increased planting of Green Hammer moved it into the third position from the sixth spot it was placed in last year. The Smith’s Gold variety garnered fourth place. The beardless variety OK Corral made a great leap moving into fifth position, which was in the 20th spot last year.

Elgin FFA's Cassie Graham Explains Why She Chose Ag Teaching- And More OYE Stuff
|
The Oklahoma Youth Expo is in full swing, having already wrapped up the Ag Mechanics contest. Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Elgin FFA Teacher Cassie Graham about why she chose to be an Ag Teacher. Graham says this is an opportunity to get involved, "This is a chance to make an impact on other students, and this has been the best career I could ever have."
Graham said last year's Ag Mechanics show was one to remember as her crew took home the Grand Prize with their multipurpose hay trailer built by Gavin Smalley, Cade Janda, Dillon Pestun, and Gavin Hollars. Graham said even though they didn't get the big prize this year, they'll be shooting for it next year, "We'll see what we can do; we're just going to get bigger and better as we go on."
With the Ag Mechanics show in its 3rd year at OYE, Graham said one of her favorite things about the show is that students can see a finished product, "They can see their labor, their work, a result of actually finishing something and take some pride in that. So no matter how these students placed today, they can walk out and say they finished their project, they did it 100% themselves, and they can be proud of that."

OSU's Kim Anderson- Prices Have Not Stabilized from the Russia/Ukraine War Just Yet
|
This week on Sunup, Crop Marketing specialist, Dr. Kim Anderson, is talking about the affects of the Russia/Ukraine Tension and says prices have not stabilized just yet. "If you look at wheat and corn, the answer is no, but if you look at cotton and soybeans, the answer is yes."
Anderson said there is still a lot of volatility in the market and other factors besides the war that are affecting prices, "India is the second largest producer of wheat. In the past have exported very little wheat. Last year, they said they wanted to start getting in the export market. They have wheat to export and looks like they may enter the market that could help stabilize our prices."
As usual- we give you a chance to hear Dr. Anderson's comments from SUNUP today before the market closes for the week- he and other OSU Specialists can be seen on SUNUP this weekend on OETA and then also on the web as well.

Debbie Lyons-Blythe Says Cattle Producers Must Take Part in Sustainability Conversation
|
U.S. beef cattle production has been a longtime scapegoat for global climate change. Environmental and animal rights extremist groups latched onto the idea that animal agriculture - especially cattle production, is a primary producer of harmful greenhouse gasses. Today, the world is beginning to know what cattle producers have known for decades: cattle production is not the climate-killer radical groups have made it out to be.
Kansas cattlewoman and chairman-elect for the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, Debbie Lyons-Blythe, said she was hesitant to join the US Roundtable. She said she believes representing the cattle industry at the Roundtable is the right thing to do but appreciates cattle producers who do not support engagement from the industry with this group.
“To some of the naysayers that are upset with me for being involved with the Roundtable, I will tell them they are not 100% wrong,” Lyons-Blythe said. “There are a lot of organizations and groups that are very much against farming and ranching, who are throwing around the word ‘sustainability.’ That does not mean (sustainability) is not coming.”
Eventually, the cattle industry is going to be forced to address the issue, Lyons-Blythe said. She feels that by being directly involved in the discussion she is making sure the conversation includes and takes into consideration sustainability at the farm and ranch level, she said.
“If we do not get involved today, we are going to have regulations (enforced) on us,” Lyons-Blythe said. “If we can show today, that by having a grazing-management plan, we are sequestering carbon and already addressing those issues.”
