Kayla Poling of the Silo FFA Chapter Prepared to Represent Oklahoma at the 2022 National FFA Convention This Week
|
The 2022 National FFA Convention is coming up this week in Indianapolis. Competing in the national contest for extemporaneous speaking will be Kayla Poling from the Silo FFA chapter.
Poling said she started her public speaking career in the 8th grade. Extemporaneous speaking, Poling said, has allowed her to become well-rounded in many different aspects of agriculture.
Poling said her favorite topics to speak about are those based around natural resources.
“Whenever I am able to talk about how farmers can feed our growing population with fewer resources is something I get extremely passionate about, because it is going to be a long-term issue and having our agriculturalist combat that in different ways of combating through technology and innovation is something I love talking about,” Poling said.

The Elite of Oklahoma FFA Headed to Indy This Week to Compete and to be Honored
|
FFA members and supporters from across the country will celebrate agriculture and agricultural education next week during the 95h National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis.
This time-honored tradition, hosted by the city of Indianapolis, will be held Oct. 26-29.
More than 60,000 FFA members from the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands are expected to participate in the event. That includes over approximately 2,000 FFA members from the state of Oklahoma.
Oklahoma FFA has a reputation of being right at the top when it comes to many of the events that will have FFA members from across the US competing for top honors. For example, Oklahoma is tied with Georgia in having the most Three Star Chapters that will be honored on the convention stage in Lucas Oil Stadium. Oklahoma and Georgia each will have 36 Chapters honored tghis week, followed by Missouri with 35. The three star rating is given only to the best of the Gold Emblem Chapters and up to ten percent of a state's chapters can earn this award if they qualify.
Click here for the Oklahoma list of high achievers that will be honored and/or are competing at this year's convention- it includes the full list of our 36 top chapters.

On Feed Numbers Down for the First Time in 2022- Derrell Peel Dissects Cattle on Feed Report
|
The October USDA Cattle on Feed report issued on Friday was exactly what the doctored ordered for the cattle industry- and was a nice bonus on top of better cattle prices seen this past week. The report shows that Cattle on Feed finally hit lower on feed numbers- lower placements and higher marketings- On Feed down 1%, Placements down 4% and Marketings up 4%. All three numbers were right where the analysts expected them to be.
I got on the phone with OSU Extension Livestock Market Economist Dr. Derrell Peel on Friday afternoon after the release of the latest USDA Cattle on Feed Report- a quarterly version with it being October, which provides us a breakdown of steers and heifers in the pipeline.
One of the keys is this slightly lower on feed number- Peel saying that this is the first time we have had a lower on feed number compared to a year earlier this year- the last time we had a lower on feed number compared to a year ago came in December 2021. "You know, we have been setting new records on a month by month basis here really all year...now we have reached the point where we have turned the corner."
On the four percent fewer placements compared to a year ago, Peel says "I think we have finally reached the end of the rope there- there just aren't more cattle out there." Peel adds that the under 600 pound category are still up by two percent - saying there are still some of these lightest cattle coming into feedlots- but the heavier weights were under a year ago and made the overall cattle number down by one percent compared to last October first.

Beef Checkoff Research Continues to Share Beef Sustainability Story with Consumers
|
Leading the scientific research on behalf of the dollar at beef checkoff at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is the NCBA’s Senior Executive Director for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Mandy Carr Johnson. In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am back visiting with Dr. Carr-Johnson about beef sustainability research.
Carr-Johnson said it is important to ensure the beef industry has the ability to tell its story and conduct research.
“If there are areas where improvements can be made, we identify those and we work towards that improvement,” Carr-Johnson said. “It may not be top of mind to some people, but it is top of mind for many who are investors in the industry, or part of the decision making on where investments are made in the industry.”
The media is interested in sustainability research, Carr-Johnson said, as well as other entities outside of the beef industry.
“We want to make sure that beef has the sound science to be involved in the discussions as we talk about knowing that producers are focused on sustainability,” Carr-Johnson said. “For many years, we may have just called it land management and water management and resource management and things like that, but we want to make sure we are staying current in today’s conversation.”
The role of the checkoff research, Carr-Johnson said, is to pinpoint what improvements have been made so far and what needs to happen next. The goal of the research, Carr-Johnson said is to ensure producers have access to data that will aid them in managing their operations the best way they see fit to improve areas that need to be addressed.
“We really are focused on understanding the consumer, so we conduct surveys every day that really track consumer’s purchase intent, where they are buying beef, how much they are buying, what makes them want to eat more or less,” Carr-Johnson said.

New Blog Post at the Southern Plains Perspective: More on Drought
|
There is a new blog post out on the Southern Plains Perspective by Clay Pope.(Thanks Clay for quoting us!) Read Below!
Talkin’ drought again….
Woke up yesterday to just some “great” news about the ongoing drought in the Oklahoma Farm Report and its impact on the regions winter wheat crop:
“In Oklahoma, winter wheat planted reached 53 percent, down 3 points from the previous year and down 13 points from the average. Winter wheat emerged reached 30 percent, down 5 points from the previous year and down 16 points from the average. Most of Oklahoma’s wheat has been dusted in, waiting on that moisture to arrive.
For Kansas, winter wheat planted was 64 percent, behind 73 percent last year, and near 66 percent for the five-year average. Emerged was 33 percent, behind 45 percent last year and the 44 percent average.
In Texas, Winter wheat planted reached 70 percent, up 7 percentage points from the previous year and the average. Winter wheat emerged reached 37 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and the average.”
The pasture news isn’t much better:
“The latest USDA crop progress report shows pasture and range conditions having yet to see improvement. Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma have the lowest pasture and range ratings in the entire country. Oklahoma pasture and range conditions are rated 78 percent poor to very poor, Nebraska is rated 83 percent poor to very poor and Kansas is rated 76 percent poor to very poor.
Other states such as Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas are also suffering from extremely poor pasture and range conditions. Texas is rated 58 percent poor to very poor and Missouri is rated 64 percent poor to very poor. Arkansas is rated 63 percent poor to very poor.
One year ago, Oklahoma’s range and pasture conditions were rated 25 percent poor to very poor, so we have seen that condition decline rapidly over the past year. Going into the winter season, these low numbers are not a good sign for those wanting to get wheat pasture cattle out on the field.”

OSU Researcher Studying Gut Bacteria to Improve Disease Resistance in Chickens
|
An Oklahoma State University researcher is trying to find the cure for a poultry disease that costs the industry $6 billion per year.
Necrotic enteritis is a disease that causes severe intestinal lesions, growth retardation and low mortality to poultry, according to Glenn Zhang, OSU professor of animal and food sciences. Zhang said there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of the disease worldwide following the industry banning the use of antibiotics because the drugs can be passed along to people, causing an immunity to antibiotic medications.
With antibiotics no longer a factor, it is important to find alternatives that will combat the disease, Zhang said, and solving the problem starts with genetics.
“For this project, we are trying to identify specific microbes and metabolites associated with resistance to necrotic enteritis in chickens,” he said. “We know there are certain breeds of chickens that are naturally resistant to infections, while there are other genetically related breeds that are relatively susceptible. I am searching for the differences in the composition and function of the gut bacteria among different breeds of chickens when it comes to infection.”

Rural Oklahoma is full of some of the greatest success stories throughout the entire state and is a big reason why Oklahoma is on track to become a top 10 state.
The Road to Rural Prosperity dives into these stories, bringing you stories covering rural life, agriculture, energy, healthcare, tourism, and politics affecting rural America.
The Road to Rural Prosperity is here to tell stories about rural America, for rural America.
KC Sheperd shares the story of Joey Carter, a hard-working farmer who was widely regarded as a model citizen in a rural North Carolina town. Carter is the focus of a movie coming out in October called Hog Farmer- the Trials of Joey Carter.
He was not the type of person who ever expected to find himself caught up in the middle of a federal lawsuit involving some of the nation’s most ruthless trial lawyers and one of the world’s largest food companies.
But that’s exactly what happened when Joey’s family farm became the focal point in a series of nuisance trials that attracted national and international media attention. While his neighbors leveled charges of environmental racism in hopes of winning multi-million-dollar verdicts, Joey was left wondering how this could happen to a man who has always taken pride in playing by the rules.
