John Riles of Midwest Farm Shows Looks Back on 29 Years of the Tulsa Farm Show
|
At the 2022 Tulsa Farm Show, I visited with John Riles with Midwest Farm Shows. Hays and Riles talk about how far the show has come, as Riles’ family began the show 29 years ago.
For the 29th year, the Tulsa Farm Show is being held at Expo Square’s SageNet Center, hosted by Midwest Farm Shows, on December 8-10. Parking and admission to the show are free, and the show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The Tulsa Farm Show was started by John Riles’ father, Riles said, and the show has grown significantly since.
“We started out doing kind of row-crop farming shows in the upper Midwest,” Riles said. “The big challenge is getting big equipment and getting a facility that was large enough, big enough doors- you know, you are always limited by the size of the doors and the layout of the facility- and I think my father and one of his associates came down here and got a look at his facility and thought, ‘wow, this is made for what we do.’”
Over the years, Riles said, they have filled up the entire upper level and received great support from the community.
“It has worked out just as they planned,” Riles said.
This year’s show, Riles said, is featuring over 300 exhibitors. Many of which, he added, have been at the show for nearly every year.

Thompson Elected Chairman of House Agriculture Committee
|
On December 7, the House Republican Steering Committee elected Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15) as Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture for the 118th Congress. Mr. Thompson will be the first Chairman from Pennsylvania in nearly 170 years. After the vote, Mr. Thompson issued the following statement:
“I am honored to lead the Committee on Agriculture and build on the accomplishments of the past two years as Ranking Member. The political landscape in Washington may be fractured, but as Chairman, I will prioritize the needs of our producers and rural communities—the backbone of this country. We will keep our foot on the gas to deliver principled solutions, robust oversight, and a Farm Bill that is responsive to the needs of the country’s farmers, ranchers, and foresters.”
The North American Meat Institute congratulated Rep. Thompson for being elected Chairman of the House Ag Committee:
“Chairman Thompson has been an outspoken supporter of the meat and poultry industry and we congratulate him on his selection by his colleagues to serve as Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee,” says Meat Institute President and CEO Julie Anna Potts. “He will provide strong leadership as the Congress tackles a new Farm Bill and we look forward to working with him in his new role.”

Lucas Named Chairman of Science and Technology Committee- Reacts to Thompson as Chair of Ag
|
As expected- Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas has been named the Chairman of the Science, Space and Technology Committee in the US House.
He won't know for sure on his seat on the House Ag Committee for a while longer- perhaps until after the Speaker's position is settled in January.
Congressman Lucas does have high praise for the new Chairman of the House Ag Committee- GT Thompson of Pennsylvania.
“I’m proud to have Chairman-elect G.T. Thompson lead the House Agriculture Committee in the 118th Congress. G.T. Thompson is a strong and loyal voice for rural America and our nation’s farmers and producers. I look forward to working with him in the next Congress as we draft a Farm Bill that prioritizes the needs of our rural communities and ensures our producers have the tools and resources they need to feed and clothe the world.”

LMA Pushes for 5-Year Reauthorization of Livestock Mandatory Reporting
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am back with Vice President, Government and Industry and Affairs at the Livestock Marketing Association, Chelsea Good, talking about the Livestock Mandatory Reporting.
Livestock Mandatory Reporting was first passed into law by congress back in 1999. A final rule was put into place in December of 2000. Since that time, LMR has been reauthorized several times- most recently in 2015. The Livestock Mandatory reporting expired in September of 2020, but since that time it been put on the backburner by congress.
The most recent continued resolution in September approved it for another few months until December 16, when it is set to expire.
Good said, this is a program that needs to be reauthorized.
“I would love a full five-year reauthorization of Livestock Mandatory Price Reporting,” Good said. “That has become challenging, partly because there are so many other ideas out there in the livestock space, that some people see LMR as a potential vehicle to try and tack other ideas onto.”
When Good visited Washington, D.C., recently, she met with the majority and minority staff of both the ag house and senate. Those individuals, Good said, are committed to making sure LMR stays reauthorized.

OSU’s Kim Anderson says Wheat and Corn Markets Are Looking “Shakey”
|
This Week on SUNUP is Oklahoma State University Extension grain market economist Kim Anderson. During this week’s edition, Anderson gives his latest update on the commodity markets.
In the last week and a half, Anderson said a dollar was knocked off wheat prices, bringing them down to around $7.90. One month ago, Anderson said wheat prices were at $9.50, so those prices have dropped quite a bit since then.
Corn has been moving sideways over the last several months, Anderson said, and was down about 30 cents this week.
Soybeans are having a good uptrend, Anderson said, but they have been moving sideways for the past few weeks. Much of that uptrend can be credited to China buying U.S. soybeans, Anderson added.
There is not much that goes on in the market between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Anderson said, and there are fewer buyers on the market during that time period.
“Right now, is a very good time to plan for that 2023 marketing year and figure out how you are going to use these scarce resources to maximize the profit, the return, to your farming enterprise,” Anderson said.

Get in the Game- Dairy MAX reaches Gen Z through innovative esports partnerships
|
Dairy has been a longtime partner of athletics due to the nutritional benefits of milk, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products that help players perform their best. Since entering the virtual world of video games in 2021 as the Official Nutrition Partner of Complexity Gaming dairy’s digital game is stronger than ever. Staking its claim in the world of esports, also known as electronic sports – a form of competition where professional esports athletes play games against each other online – dairy now has an extended platform to interact with a broader audience.
Making a move into the esports space was the natural next step to better market dairy to the next generation by meeting them where they’re spending time — in the digital world. Gen Z, who are individuals born after 1996, are digital natives who have never experienced life without cell phones or internet access. This constant need for virtual connection has driven Gen Z to consider gaming as more than a hobby, but a lifestyle. In fact, 96 percent of Gen Z games, and 46 percent watch esports, giving way to another channel of marketing opportunities.
With a focus on better reaching Gen Z consumers to extend nutrition education, Dairy MAX has announced a new partnership with OpTic, one of the most winning esports organizations in the world. This partnership will allow collaboration at live and virtual events, integrated social media campaigns, and video content showcasing esports pros and gaming personalities testing dairy’s benefits on their cognitive performance and opportunities for students to compete and learn.
