Entries Up From Last Year for the 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress
|
In this episode of Beef Buzz, I am visiting with the Chairman of the Cattlemen’s Congress board of directors and president of Express Ranches, Jarold Callahan.
Regarding last year’s show, Callahan said he was pleased with how everything came together.
“The sales were fantastic, the participation was really good, and it just continued to grow,” Callahan said.
The show exhibitors, Callahan said, enjoyed the hospitality of Oklahoma City, and the convenience of the fairground’s location. Cattlemen’s Congress, he added, has received the support of the governor’s office, the mayor’s office, and those in the retail and livestock sector surrounding Oklahoma City.
“We have had a lot of support for it, and it has been extremely successful,” Callahan said.
Entries for the show are up this year, Callahan said, at over 10,000 head of cattle entered.
“We wanted a cattle show for cattle people, and we invite all the cattle producers and Oklahoma’s surrounding states to come and look at the cattle, participate in the sales and watch the events,” Callahan said.

All-American Beef Battalion Raises over $65,000 for Military Service Members
|
Farm Director, KC Sheperd, attended the 11th annual All-American Beef Battalion benefit in the Oklahoma National Stockyards, where a calf is auctioned off each year to raise funds to aid military service members and their families through the AABB. The calf auctioned at this year’s benefit was donated by 3C Cattle Feeders and the Clyde Runyan family of Mill Creek, Oklahoma.
The All-American Beef Battalion is a group of individuals involved in the U.S. beef cattle industry working to support service members and their families- both past and present. To date, the AABB has served over 400,000 steaks in 26 different states across America.
During the event, Sheperd got the chance to speak with the Senior Vice Chairman of the AABB, Jon Fort, and the Secretary and Treasurer of AABB, Cathy Blair.
The AABB shows its appreciation for past and present service members, Fort said, by serving them a ribeye steak at no cost.
Each year, Fort said a 700-800lb steer or heifer is donated and auctioned off. Last year, Fort said they raised close to $62,000.
At the time of publication, the total so far is at $65,000 plus. We will update you with the final total as soon as we receive it.

Major Beef Exporters and Importers in 2023
|
Mondays, Dr. Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist, offers his economic analysis of the beef cattle industry. This analysis is a part of the weekly series known as the “Cow Calf Corner” published electronically by Dr. Peel and Mark Johnson. Today, Dr. Peel talks about global beef production.
Global beef production is forecast to decrease slightly in 2023. Beef production decreases in the U.S. and European Union will more than offset increasing beef production in Australia and modest increases in Mexico and India. Changes in beef production and consumption will impact global beef exports and imports in the coming year. Brazil is expected to remain the largest beef exporter with beef production increasing slightly in 2023. Brazil beef exports are limited by decreased beef imports in China. Beef exports from Brazil are significantly higher than the next three exporters.
Australia, after drought in recent years decreased cattle numbers and beef production, is now in rebuilding mode. Cattle prices are falling from historically high levels in Australia and beef exports are forecast to increase, helping Australia regain the number two spot. The U.S., number two beef exporting country in 2022 with record or near-record exports, will likely see exports decrease with declining beef production, higher beef prices and a continued strong dollar. The U.S. will likely drop to fourth place, a position it has frequently occupied in recent year. India is the remaining top four beef exporter with steady exports expected in 2023. India exports large quantities of water buffalo meat (carabeef) to low-end markets in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Butterfly Habitat Brings Beauty and Biodiversity
|
The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) has partnered with Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever for the second year to help increase pollinator habitat on agricultural lands. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever is a non-profit conservation organization with a 40-year history of working with private landowners to help them meet their on-farm habitat goals. With over 250 field staff providing technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, and other private landowners in 35 states, they are the experts in creating high-quality habitat.
Creating high-quality pollinator habitat benefits more than just bees and butterflies. Many species of birds, including upland species like pheasants and quail, along with other wildlife species benefit from these areas, too. In addition, a well-planned pollinator habitat can increase biodiversity, sequester carbon, and reduce erosion which, in turn, leads to greater on-farm sustainability.
We are encouraging NCGA members to reach out to their local Pheasants Forever staff here to get started on creating high-quality pollinator habitat on your farm. Along with technical assistance on where and what to plant, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever staff will assist you in navigating cost-share and incentive-based programs to help you establish pollinator habitat.

USMEF’s Dean Meyer sees Beef Production Numbers for 2023 As a Challenge
|
The U.S. Meat Export Federations strategic planning conference took place last month in Oklahoma City, where they named Dean Meyer the new Chairman. Meyer is a corn, soybean, and livestock producer from Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Farm Director KC Sheperd caught up with Meyer, who said the conference provided great information that brings something to everyone wanting to learn.
“Whether it’s the international staff that’s presenting or just intelligence from the market here, I appreciate those conferences, and I hope we can continue,” Meyer said.
Meyer said a meeting in person after not having the luxury to do so because of COVID-19 has made things much easier.
“We can have evening conversations, the hallway talk, and there’s so much to be gained from that alone,” Meyer said. “I learned so much from those on the other side of the sector, being a producer and visiting with the traders and the packers and then the international staff.”
Meyer said it resonates more when the international staff can come to the U.S. and tell their story.
“Just like it does when we go into their countries and tell our story, and that’s the beauty of the U.S. Meat Export Federation,” Meyer said. “We’ve got the best staff in the world working in those countries. And then, we can go as a nine-sector group and present what we produce. And in Southeast Asia, that’s what they want. They don’t just want our high-quality product. They want the story behind it.”

Second Round of USDA Climate-Smart Pilot Project Funding Includes Oklahoma Grants
|
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Monday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing an additional $325 million for 71 projects under the second funding pool of the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities effort, bringing the total investment from both funding pools to over $3.1 billion for 141 tentatively selected projects.
Several projects were focused on Oklahoma from the second round of Climate Smart Ag Grants
One of those grants is the "Climate-Smart Commodities and Market Development within the Chickasaw Nation: Restoring Power to Small Farmers and Communities Through Pecan and Specialty Crop Engagement"
According to the USDA, this $4.9 million grant will engage participating farmers as they receive incentives for climate-smart practices, including reducing chemical applications on pecan trees and conversion of pastures to multiple species of native grasses. Through this project, the Chickasaw Nation plans to work with native pecan aggregators to divide verified climate-smart native pecans from non-verified native pecans. These pecans would be sourced to sale for any industry interested in climate-smart pecans and to local consumers.
The Lead Partner is the Chickasaw Nation.
Other Major Partners include Murray State College, Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association, Oklahoma Conservation Commission
************************************************
Another of the projects that focus mostly on Oklahoma is the The Building Climate Success by Empowering Humans to Care for our Natural Resources
Through this project, tribal and other underserved producers would receive financial assistance for adopting climate-smart practices for livestock and pecan production in Oklahoma. Project partners plan to create tools and partnerships for enrollees to market climate-smart products, including the creation of a climate-smart marketing class session and other resources.
The Lead Partner is the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts Incorporated
Other Major Partners: Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD), the Oklahoma Conservation Commission (OCC), the Oklahoma Black Historical Research Project (OBHRPI), the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Conservation District, the Choctaw Nation Conservation District, and the Oklahoma Department of Forestry
Primary States Expected: Tribal, OK
Major Commodities: Pecans, Livestock
Approximate Funding Ceiling: $4,900,000

Southern Plains Perspective: Surfin’ the net for blog ideas can be a mixed bag…
|
There is a new blog post out at the Southern Plains Perspective, by Clay Pope. Read below!
I thought I had a great idea in mind for my blog this week….I’m not kidding. But, as with all the best-laid plans of mice and men, they often go awry (and so did my blog idea). So here I am digging around for ideas to write about at the last minute.
I came across all kinds of “positive” climate-smart ag/soil health/conservation type headlines that I thought I might share.
Summary—“In a discovery that has repercussions for everything from domestic agricultural policy to global food security and the plans to mitigate climate change, researchers recently announced that the rate of soil erosion in the Midwestern US is 10 to 1,000 times greater than pre-agricultural erosion rates. These newly discovered pre-agricultural rates, which reflect the rate at which soils form, are orders of magnitude lower than the upper allowable limit of erosion set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).”
–Always nice to see that we are losing topsoil at an alarming rate….
