Wheat Harvest Moving Rather Slowly in Southwestern Counties
Fri, 29 May 2009 5:34:20 CDT
Wheat harvest is going fairly slow today across southwestern Oklahoma. According to Mike Schulte, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, locations that were taking some wheat earlier in the wheat are now finding the sample loads coming in test at moisture levels that are unacceptable to be harvested. This is especially true where some farmers are trying to cut wheat varieties that are a little later maturing.
We also talked with Mike about the reports that we are hearing of many producers deciding to bail their wheat for hay in central and some northern areas of the state. And, Mike confirms that he is hearing that many custom harvest crews are not coming into southern Oklahoma this year- or they are brining fewer machines and a smaller crew, because of the limited number of acres that will be cut here in 2009.
