June First Afternoon Wheat Harvest Update
Mon, 01 Jun 2009 17:37:01 CDT
Harvest of the 2009 Oklahoma wheat crop continues- with loads of wheat trickling in to elevators in the southwestern part of the state. Cassidy Grain in Frederick indicated they had taken perhaps 16 to 17 loads of wheat up to about 4 PM on Monday afternoon, with yields being discussed by farmers around 10 bushels per acre.
Many farmers have taken the forage route, baling the wheat for hay as we see in this picture we snapped in Canadian County.
Others have put cattle in the wheat fields, hoping for some grazing gains. Others have applied Roundup and have either already moved in with a summer crop or plan to do so, if they have enough moisture. One producer emailed us that "Our crop was a total loss due to drought then freeze then hail, first time in my 39 years of farming not to harvest a bushel of wheat."
Those that are harvesting with a combine are keeping a good percentage of what they have grown in home storage for seed wheat. The number of loads of wheat heading into town may be twenty percent or less of what was taken in by elevators in 2008.
We talked with Mike Schulte of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission about this situation late on Monday afternoon- and we have his comments linked below on the Listen Bar.
