Harvest Updates

The Latest on the 2009 Wheat Harvest- Satuday Morning June 20, 2009

Sat, 20 Jun 2009 5:09:42 CDT

More harvest reports are coming in and here are two more- as of Saturday morning, June 20, 2009.

We have another report from Alfalfa County from a farmer we are hearing from for the first time this harvest season. He writes "Our yields have varied considerably from field to field. Watching the monitor in the combine there is a lot of variability within the field. Standing water takes a toll on wheat pretty fast. Our yields have been from 35 to 50. Endurance has been our best wheat and it was also grazed the most. OK Bullet has turned out much better than it looked like it would."

From Texas County, Bob Detrick of Tyrone gives us a report about the variety Guymon. "Have cut some fields of Guymon wheat in Texas County from Adams to Tyrone, test weights from 61.7 to 65# /bushel. Yields from 42.67, 41.6, 47.61, 38. All of this is white wheat, but I am giving it up." The reason is that it is being docked an extra ten cents per bushel compared to hard red winter. That type of economic disincentive may mean the end of hard white wheat. Detrick goes on to say of his wheat this season "I am just thankful to the Good Lord for the crop this year, for all it went through. We have been calling this harvest a pokerhand crop. Looked like we had drawn a duece in March, then another, then finally drew 3 aces for a full house."
