As NCBA Weighs Restructure Concept- Beef Board Officer Has "legitimate concerns" About Impact on Beef Checkoff

Sat, 30 Jan 2010 6:55:59 CST

As NCBA Weighs Restructure Concept- Beef Board Officer Has There is concern about the NCBA governance plan that is being expressed by one of the officers of the Cattlemen's Beef Board, Tom Jones of Arkansas. Jones, who is expected to be the Vice Chairman of the CBB at the conclusion of this year's meetings in San Antonio, says that his concern is strictly about how the restructuring of the NCBA would impact the checkoff. He reminded us in an audio conversationt that you can hear by clicking on the Listen Bar below that this proposal is a NCBA proposal- he is only interested in it where it intersects with the natyional beef checkoff program.

Jones talked with Ron Hays and Stewart Doan on Friday night about the concept- and contends that the Beef Board is responsible for the entire dollar- and that the State Beef Councils have to fully comply with the Beef Checkoff Act and Order for the half of the money they retain after sending fifty cents of every dollar to the CBB to be invested on behalf of stakeholders. Jones says ONLY the Beef Board or these agents of the Beef Board, the State Beef Councils, can make decisions abouot how to spend checkoff money. He has concerns of allowing one group to have influence over those decisions while other groups that have members who pay the checkoff do not have that access. He adds that the allocating of beef checkoff funds must be fair to all payers of the checkoff.

Click on the Listen Bar below to hear his very candid remarks about the problems with the NCBA Governance Task Force proposal that he believes are more than just perception- if anyone other than a "checkoff person" dictates how checkoff monies will be spent.
