Over the Top Regulation Scares the New President of the NCBA- We Talk to Steve Foglesong
Thu, 04 Feb 2010 4:35:36 CST
The new President of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association says governmental policy has to be a top priority for the group in 2010. He says issues like the economy and demand won't matter if cattlemen are regulated out of business. One policy concern is the consideration to allow gasoline to contain 15-percent ethanol. Steve Foglesong noted high feed costs were a big problem in 2008 when corn prices topped seven-dollars a bushel. He says the industry fears corn prices would spike again if the EPA approves an E15 blend - sending feed costs even higher.
Foglesong also is concerned about regulations like the particulate matter rule- dust. One of the common denominators of many of these regulations that may be hitting the cattle industry broadside is the agency that is handling the details- the EPA. We talk about the challenge of this regulatory body, as well as get Steve's take on what one thing he really wants to achieve in his year as President of the NCBA.
