Central Oklahoma Research Stations in Chickasha and Ft. Cobb Honored

Sun, 28 Feb 2010 7:39:09 CST

Central Oklahoma Research Stations in Chickasha and Ft. Cobb Honored Comprised of 18 research stations, the Controlled Environmental Research Lab, the Ridge Road Greenhouse Phase I and Phase II, the Noble Research Center and the Stored Product Research and Extension Center, the Oklahoma State University Field and Research Unit (FRSU) is a prominent figure in research throughout the state.

Station superintendents, assistant superintendants, coordinators, lab managers and other members of the FRSU team that provide a service to the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DASNR) came together this week for its annual two day in-service training meeting.

A new tradition within the group started during last year's in-service training. Brent Westerman, FRSU senior director, created the Stewardship Award, which recognizes the research station throughout the state that stands above the rest in terms of research support, public visibility and service to clientele.

"In many instances, the only contact the public may have with OSU or DASNR may be through an experiment station," Westerman said. "The stations really provide a wonderful opportunity for us to reach out to our clientele, which are the farmers, ranchers, and local communities from literally across the state of Oklahoma."

This year's recipient was the Central Oklahoma Research Station Complex (CORSC). The CORSC consists of two research stations. The South Central Research Station is in Chickasha and the Caddo Research Station is in Ft. Cobb. Each of these stations provides an important focal point for state, regional and nationwide research activities. The picture here is from the 2008 Field Day that showcased biofuels research efforts in Chickasha.

Senior Station Superintendent for both stations, Donald Hooper, and the Assistant Station Superintendent, Robert Weidenmaier, at the Caddo Research Station were both presented the award at the Wes Watkins Center on OSU-Stillwater's campus.

"The Central Oklahoma Research Station Complex was chosen because of their long-term support of ongoing research projects. Between the two individuals they have devoted more 60 years of service to support millions of dollars of research that has benefited the people, state and the nation," Westerman said. "I'm really proud to present this award to that group."

The South Central Research Station, consisting of 437 acres, participates in studies including variety trials, culture techniques, tillage, biosystems and agricultural engineering studies, Integrated Pest Management, and for the last three years has emphasized research in the biofuels arena.

The Caddo Research station is considerably smaller in size, but equals its impact by providing a location to conduct research with sandy soils with high transmissivity rates. Peanut cultivar development, weed, disease, insect control and soil fertility are the primary focus of their research. The departments of plant and soil sciences, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology and biosystems and agricultural engineering all conduct studies at the station.

"Our group supports more than a thousand ongoing research trials statewide and really is the backbone for research at our outlining and local research facilities in the Division of Agriculture," Westerman said. "Our Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station System is truly a priceless commodity that reaps astronomical benefits for the residents of this great state."

Aside from being a part of the Stewardship Award winning team, Hooper was joined by Darlene Justice and William Barnes to be recognized as they have decided to retire after many years of service.

Justice has notched 23 years of service as the secretary at the South Central Research Station, while Hooper has logged 38 years. Barnes, electronics shop coordinator at the Noble Research Center has been with the DASNR for 23 years.

"Combined, all three of these individuals logged nearly 85 years of loyal, dedicated and faithful service for the DASNR and I would like to extend a sincere thanks for their tremendous efforts while working for Oklahoma State University. They truly have been an asset for the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station and they will be hard to replace," Westerman said.
