Harvest Restarts- This Weekend Likely to See Lots of Combines Rolling

Fri, 18 Jun 2010 17:04:52 CDT

Harvest Restarts- This Weekend Likely to See Lots of Combines Rolling Harvest is starting to roll once again in Oklahoma and our neighbor states of Texas and in southern Kansas. Hot and drier conditions are gradually allowing harvest to restart. The forecast from News9 in Oklahoma City shows a string of Sunny hot days with afternoons hitting the mid 90s right into the middle of next week.

The picture here is of the Zeorian Family Custom Crew- we talked to Jenna Zeorian on Friday afternoon about their second stop of the wheat harvest season- Hooker, Oklahoma. They were able to finally start cutting wheat last night- she tells me the fields are soft and they are hoping to not get stuck in a mud hole. You can hear our full conversation with this young lady who is one of the bloggers on the website, All Aboard the 2010 Wheat Harvest, which is sponsored in part by DuPont Crop Protection.

Beyond Hooker- the folks at the Oklahoma Wheat Commission have several locations where they have info on harvest rolling again- or about to get rolling. Here's their rundown:

Bison area:
Moisture tests might average 11.7 percent, but it is a matter of mud and getting in and out of fields that have producers stalled. A few producers are bringing in loads reported to average 60 pounds, but they are only 40 percent done.

Perry/Stillwater area:
Today marks the completion of one whole day of harvest. This afternoon fields are seeing a bit of activity, but not everyone is back in them yet. Tomorrow's weather forecast has hopes high that they will be able to get another day of harvest done. Reports of test weights range from 58 to 60 pounds. Today is the first time all week that anyone has been able to cut and the moisture levels range from 11 to 14 percent.

Ponca City/Blackwell area:
Mud and moisture are keeping some producers out of the field around these towns. Of the loads reported, test weights averaged 60 pounds today and the moisture averaged 12 percent. They only have a few full days of harvest complete so no yield amounts have been reported.

Cherokee/Alva area:
Harvest started back today. Producers are hopeful they will be able to get a good run at cutting. Producers fighting mud in some areas and yields in this region are ranging from 20 to 60 bushels per acre. Test weights dropped some in this region, to 59 to 60 pounds.

Shattuck area:
This is the first good day of harvest in Shattuck. Test weights coming in at 58 to 59 pounds. No yields have been reported.

Hooker area:
Reports from the Panhandle are that the dryland wheat is doing well. We are hearing fields making from the mid 50's to the mid 60's per bushel. We have one report from a producer that tells us he cut one 80 acre field that made 71 bushels per acre on dryland wheat. Test weights being reported at 60 to 61 pounds. We have heard some early protein reports of composites from 11.9 to 12.0 percent.
