From the Oklahoma Wheat Commission- Harvest Edges Closer to Completion

Fri, 25 Jun 2010 5:41:48 CDT

From the Oklahoma Wheat Commission- Harvest Edges Closer to Completion Harvest continues closer and closer to being done in the state of Oklahoma. And from Kansas, we have a report from central Kansas that shows they are also doing well. Mike Becker emails us about their harvest experience. "Wheat harvest here in central KS near Salina is winding down. Not as many trucks on the road, we got done last Sunday afternoon.

"The best wheat we had was SanteFe, no tilled on soybean ground last fall. Cut the soybeans one day and planted the next with a JD no till air seader. Test weight was 62 and the yield was 61. Our yields varied from 48 to 61 bushels per acre. A lot of wheat stubble going to soybeans as soon as the wheat crop is off.

"All of our 2010 soybeans went in before Memorial Day and are getting good growth to them. So were the few acres of corn we planted and it is tasseling. Then the rains came and we were delayed in planting milo. Hopefully get out there in the next day or two to no till 600 acres of milo.

"Our long range plans are for more rotation, possibly working toward not planting the same crop twice in a row on any piece of ground."

Now, here us our harvest update from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission staffer KC Kinder.

Newkirk area:
Some fields saw a sprinkle or two, but nothing to keep producers out of the fields. They are into their fifth full day of harvest and are about 50 percent done in around here. Test weights remain in the 58-59 pound region and yields are ranging from 30 to 35 bushels per acre.

Jet area:
Reports indicate that the moisture is in the nine percent range and producers are almost done with harvest. We received one yield report if 61 bushels per acre and it weighed 62 pounds.

Shattuck/Gage area:
Producers have gotten through 90 percent of the crop here, but clouds are threatening to rain this afternoon. There aren't reports of any rain yet, but they say it is only a matter of time before they have to get out of the fields for a minute. Test weights are ranging from 59-61 pounds and we had a yield report of 56 bushels per acre. Other reports are from 27 to 39 bushels.

Buffalo area:
Hopes are high that harvest will be done by tomorrow. They indicate that 99 percent of the crop has been cut. Test weights, over the past three days, have fallen to 58 pounds with a few loads weighing 60 pounds.

Panhandle area:
We received a report of test weights in 61 to 63 pound range and yields of 54 and 55 bushels per acre. They indicate that harvest is 50 percent complete and they are seeing clean wheat so far. They anticipate a great end to the week if the predicted thunderstorms hold off. The humidity is pretty high right now, but it isn't causing any slow down or problems. They have gotten a good start to their irrigated wheat crop.
