Hot Temepratures Help Rapidly Expand Wheat Harvest

Fri, 04 Jun 2010 5:29:49 CDT

Hot Temepratures Help Rapidly Expand Wheat Harvest Mike Schulte with the Oklahoma Wheat Commission offers this latest update on wheat harvest efforts across the state- with a report included from almost the Oklahoma-Kansas border. Hot temperatures and drying winds are getting wheat dead ripe and ready to be harvested across a wide area of the state- with some locations reporting that they are waiting on custom harvest crews to show up from further south.

Here's Mike's report on a community by community basis:

Frederick area:
Harvest is estimated to be 60 to 70 percent complete. Test weights continue to average 62 to 65 pounds with yields ranging from the low 20's to the mid 40's. Predictions are the average of the crop in this region will be in the low 30's.

Apache area:
Elevators have taken in a few loads. They look for harvest to get started into full swing this afternoon and tomorrow. The test weights on the wheat received ranges between 62 and 65 pounds.

Lawton area:
Moisture is coming in at 12 percent with test weights ranging from 57 to 62 pounds and yields in the 30- 32 bushels per acre range.

Minco area:
A few loads of earlier planted wheat has be taken in and their test weights have been 62 to 65 pounds.

Clinton area:
There are a limited number of producers bringing in product right now. A majority of them are waiting on the custom harvest crews to make it to them, but the crop is still about five days away from being ready. With no rain in the past 10 days and the forecast for 100+ degree days spanning the next week, harvest should be full blown by Tuesday. From the bushels taken in, their test weights are averaging 62 pounds and the moisture is running at 11.5 percent. We received one yield of 37 bushels per acre on a field of Jagger.

Hydro area:
Our reporters say the crop isn't quite ready yet, but should turn in the next two days. Their predictions are for harvest to get going Monday and Tuesday. The one load reported taken in had a test weight of 63.5 pounds.

Okarche area:
Producers are getting started in this area. They have taken in a couple loads in this morning with test weights running 61 pounds.

Kingfisher area:
Producers are just getting started in this area and report test weights running 60 to 62.5 pounds. Producers are reporting yields from the low 30's to mid 40's. Predictions are that we are at least looking at an average of low to mid 30 range for the entire region. We have to take into consideration a lot of crop acreage has been lost in this area to hail damage received in previous weeks.

Okeene area:
Test weights running in the 60 to 62 pound range but producers just getting a good start in this region.

Ashley area:
Wheat is being taken in this location, which is between Cherokee and Alva, with test weights between 60 and 62 pounds. The moisture around this location is reported at 10 percent.
