Wheat Harvest Continues in Road Gear in Multiple Locations Under the Hot Oklahoma Sun
Tue, 08 Jun 2010 16:54:25 CDT
Harvest of the 2010 Hard Red Winter Wheat Crop continues in Oklahoma- and here is the location by location recap of the 2010 harvest scene as of Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 PM. We also spent some time on the phone with Mike Schulte, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission- and you can go to the bottom of this page and click on the Listen Bar to hear our conversation about harvest.
Frederick area:
Reports say they are 99 percent finished with harvest, simply waiting on the last few loads to come in. Our sources say the quality is there, but the bushels aren't. Some say the abandonment rate is about 20 percent, higher than expected. Test weights averaged 63 pounds in the last few days and the moisture has been lower than nine percent.
Hobart area:
Harvest in this area is about 90 percent complete. Test weights have been coming in at 62 to 65 pounds. Dockage on wheat has not really been an issue and yields are ranging from the high 20 to the mid 30 bushels per acre.
Rocky area:
Test weights are averaging 61 pounds. Harvest in this area is progressing with producers in the fields cutting this week. Protein levels seem to be doing better in this area; we have had some 12 and 13 percent reports.
Tuttle area:
Test weights coming in at an average of 61.5 pounds. Yields are all over the board with one report of a large field bringing in 58 bushels per acre. Harvest in this area is approximately 25 percent complete.
Minco area:
Test weights coming in at 62 to 64.5 pounds. Yields reported in this area to be making 35 to 55 bushels per acre.
Hydro area:
Harvest in this area is around 25 percent done, with test weights averaging 62.5 pounds and some reports of 45 to 55 bushels per acre yields.
Kingfisher area:
Test weights are averaging 63.5 pounds today. Harvest east of town and east of Okarche is progressing at full speed with 40 to 50 percent of the region cut. Producer yields are ranging from the mid 20's to mid 40's bushels per acre in places.
Watonga area:
Things are still too wet for harvest to get into full swing. Samples are coming in with average test weights of 61.5 pounds and moisture averaging 14 percent. Some producers are in the fields today, but this is the first day of multiple producers making an attempt to harvest. We have had a few yield reports and they are in the higher 40 bushel per acre range.
Bison area:
Producers in this area we just getting in the fields when the rain moved through yesterday morning. Today started off muggy, keeping combines out of fields because the moisture of the wheat samples this morning were too high. As of right now, the humidity in Bison is reported at 44 percent making it feel like 105 degrees. Our sources say producers should start getting back in the field this afternoon, making this the second day viable for harvest. Of samples reported to us, the test weights averaged 56.4 pounds and 15 percent moisture.
Alva/Cherokee area:
Today's forecast of sunny, windy and 46 percent humidity has most farmers out of the fields. They also have a 30 percent chance of rain this evening and into tomorrow. The few producers that are cutting and bringing in test loads report moisture up to 13.8 to 14 percent opposed to the 11 to 11.5 percent reports on tests loads this past weekend. Test weights are still in the 62 to 65 pound range, with predictions they will get heavier as the moisture goes down.
