NCBA to Provide Update to Media on Governance Proposal

Tue, 08 Jun 2010 21:38:16 CDT

NCBA to Provide Update to Media on Governance Proposal The National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the Federation of State Beef Councils will be holding a media briefing on Wednesday morning to update the status of the proposed plan to restructure the NCBA, which has an impact on the Federation of State Beef Councils.

Both "policy" and "checkoff" leaders will be on the teleconference to discuss their meetings with the US Department of Agriculture, as well as other organizations that have raised concerns about how NCBA has too cozy of a relationship with the Federation of State Beef Councils. Those Councils controls half of the beef checkoff dollar, and the NCBA proposal would allow NCBA policy members to have influence during the decision process of how the portion of Checkoff funds that State Beef Councils allocate to the Federation.

NCBA has provided a two page fact sheet on "Improving NCBA's Governance" and we have a PDF file of it at the bottom of this page- click on the PDF link to open it.

The fact sheet includes some recent changes that have been provided to US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack today (Tuesday) and include a provision that the Federation may choose their officers and the members of the Beef Board Operating Committee that they elect in "any process the Federation chooses." It also states that any "State Beef Council delegates to NCBA's House of Delgates will be prohibited from voting on matters whose purpose is to influence governmental policy or action."

We will be covering the Media Briefing and have updates for you later in the day on Wednesday.
