Wheat Harvest Slow Due to Humid Conditions Across Oklahoma

There's a lot of humidity in the air across Oklahoma as of Thursday afternoon- so wheat harvest reports show cutting has been limited today. KC Kinder of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission provides us with the following report as of 4 PM on Thursday, June 10, 2010.
Sentinel area:
They are about 90 percent done for the year, but slight showers moved through this morning and stopped everyone for the day. Test weights have averaged from 62.5 to 62.8 pounds and their yields are from 35 to 65 bushels per acre. The smaller yields are coming off of grazed land and the higher numbers were fertilized, our reports indicate. They aren’t reporting any abandonment or dockage concerns. Some farmers commented that they are experiencing higher yields from their earlier planted wheat, instead of from their later planted crop.
Bessie area:
They is no activity yet in this region, but hopes are they will get in this evening. Harvest is 2/3 complete. Average test weights are 62 pounds, with the exception of a two loads of 65 pounds. Average yields are reported at 32 bushels per acre and one producer turned in a 55 bushel yield. Some producers encountered thinner stands than expected.
Minco/Tuttle area:
The combination of cloud cover and humidity has put a halt to harvest. A handful of farmers are hopeful they can get in the fields today, but not many believe that will actually happen. Loads hauled in today were cut last evening, last night. They averaged 62.7 pounds on test weight, with 12 percent moisture. Comments came in about the great color of the loads dumped today.
Hammon/ Butler area:
Harvest started one week ago and they report harvest to be 35 percent complete. Of that in the bin, test weights average 61 pounds, moisture 10.5 percent and yields are at 30 bushels per acre. Our reports indicate less acreage than expected that was turned into hay. One reported noted a slightly increased presence of dockage, but nothing to be alarmed about.
Okarche/Kingfisher area:
They are 60 percent done with test weights averaging 62 pounds. Recent yield reports came in averaging 35 bushels per acre.
Pond Creek area:
Some samples have been tested today, but the moisture is too high for harvest to start. Of the loads taken in yesterday, test weights were from 58 to 59 pounds. The lower numbers are being blamed on stripe rust and stress from lack of rain. They don’t expect anyone getting in the fields today, as the area has been too humid and cloudy.
Burlington area:
As of 3 p.m., producers were still sidelined by the humidity. Reports are that everyone has cut a little, but harvest hasn’t honestly started because once in the fields the stems are still green. Of the reports we have, some Fuller is ready, with a 63 pound test weight and an average of 45 bushels per acre. There was even a section of heavily grazed Fuller that averaged 54 bushels per acre. These loads tested at 12 percent for protein.
We didn’t get any reports of harvest action any further west than the Hammon area. Calls to the Woodward and Arnett areas put harvest at four days from getting started. Officials are hopeful that the protein percentage will increase as harvest expands to the north.
