Soybean and Corn Plantings Up from 2009- Soybeans at Record Levels Two reports were issued this morning by NASS at the USDA. The first of those reports was the planted acreage numbers for our spring planted crops in the US. Click here for the complete report from USDA on acreage numbers. (The picture here is of the 2010 corn crop from earlier this week in Grant County- just east of Lamont, Oklahoma.)


Here are a few of the highlights:



Corn planted area for all purposes in 2010 is estimated at 87.9 million acres, up 2 percent from last year. The largest increases in planted acreage compared to last year are reported in Illinois and Kansas, both up 600,000 acres from 2009. Other notable increases were shown in Indiana, up 400,000 acres; Missouri, up 300,000 acres; and Ohio, up 250,000 acres. The largest decrease in planted acreage is reported in Iowa, down 400,000 acres, while both Nebraska and South Dakota are down 350,000 acres from the previous year.



Soybean planted area for 2010 is estimated at a record high 78.9 million acres, up 2 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 78.0 million acres, is also up 2 percent from 2009, and will be the largest harvested area on record, if realized. Compared with last year, planted acreage increased by 300,000 acres or more in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Nebraska. The States with the largest declines compared with last year are Arkansas, down 270,000 acres, and North Carolina, down 250,000 acres. Record high planted acreage is estimated in Kansas, Nebraska, New York, and Pennsylvania, and planted area will tie the previous record high in Minnesota and Oklahoma.



All wheat planted area is estimated at 54.3 million acres, down 8 percent from 2009. This is the lowest United States total since 1971. The 2010 winter wheat planted area, at 37.7 million acres, is 13 percent below last year. Of this total, about 28.5 million acres are Hard Red Winter, 5.8 million acres are Soft Red Winter, and 3.4 million acres are White Winter. Area planted to other spring wheat for 2010 is estimated at 13.9 million acres, up 5 percent from 2009. Of this total, about 13.3 million acres are Hard Red Spring wheat. Durum planted area for 2010 is estimated at 2.68 million acres, up 5 percent from the previous year.   Growers in North Dakota planted more wheat than Kansas for only the fourth time on record.



All Cotton plantings for 2010 are estimated at 10.9 million acres, 19 percent above last year. Upland planted area is estimated at 10.7 million acres, up 19 percent from 2009. Increased planted acres are expected in all States except Louisiana, where acres are unchanged from last year's record low. In Alabama, California, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, planted acreage increased over 30 percent with California experiencing the largest percentage gain with a 76 percent increase.   American-Pima cotton growers planted 209,000 acres, up 48 percent from 2009.

The USDA also issued their latest Grain Stock Report, based on June first data. This report shows that Corn Stocks are up 1 Percent from June 2009, Soybean Stocks are down 4 Percent and all Wheat Stocks Up 48 Percent. Click here for the complete report as released by USDA on Grain Stocks.


Here are some of the highlights of the latest grain stocks report:


Corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 4.31 billion bushels, up 1 percent from June 1, 2009. Of the total stocks, 2.13 billion bushels are stored on farms, down 3 percent from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 2.18 billion bushels, are up 6 percent from a year ago. The March - May 2010 indicated disappearance is 3.38 billion bushels, compared with 2.69 billion bushels during the same period last year.


Soybeans stored in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 571 million bushels, down 4 percent from June 1, 2009. On-farm stocks totaled 233 million bushels, up 3 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 338 million bushels, are down 9 percent from a year ago. Indicated disappearance for the March - May 2010 quarter totaled 699 million bushels, down 1 percent from the same period a year earlier.


All wheat stored in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 973 million bushels, up 48 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 210 million bushels, up 49 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 763 million bushels, are up 48 percent from a year ago. The March - May 2010 indicated disappearance is 383 million bushels, down slightly from the same period a year earlier.


Durum wheat stocks in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 34.6 million bushels, up 38 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 23.9 million bushels, are up 80 percent from June 1, 2009. Off-farm stocks totaled 10.7 million bushels, down 9 percent from a year ago. The March - May 2010 indicated disappearance of 20.9 million bushels is up 191 percent from the same period a year earlier.


Barley stocks in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 115 million bushels, up 30 percent from June 1, 2009. On-farm stocks are estimated at 40.4 million bushels, 50 percent above a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 74.7 million bushels, are 21 percent above June 1, 2009. The March - May 2010 indicated disappearance is 42.2 million bushels, 5 percent above the same period a year earlier.


Oats stored in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 80.3 million bushels, 4 percent below the stocks on June 1, 2009. Of the total stocks on hand, 17.6 million bushels are stored on farms, 1 percent higher than a year ago. Off-farm stocks totaled 62.7 million bushels, 6 percent below the previous year. Indicated disappearance during March - May 2010 totaled 17.6 million bushels, compared with 11.4 million bushels during the same period a year ago.


Grain sorghum stored in all positions on June 1, 2010 totaled 87.9 million bushels, down 14 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks, at 10.7 million bushels, are down 11 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 77.2 million bushels, are down 14 percent from June 1, 2009. The March - May 2010 indicated disappearance from all positions is 87.7 million bushels, down 15 percent from the same period last year.
