Wed, 04 Aug 2010 17:48:38 CDT
As part of National Farmers Market Week - the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday the National Farmers Market Directory has seen an increase of 16-percent over 2009 - now listing more than 61-hundred operational farmers markets. The top five states with the most farmers markets include California, New York, Illinois, Michigan and Iowa respectively. The top five states with market growth in the past year are Missouri, Minnesota, Idaho, Michigan and Indiana respectively. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says continued strong growth in the number of farmers markets indicates regional food systems provide great economic, social and health benefits to communities across the country.
