U.S. and China Building Wind Energy Resources

Fri, 06 Aug 2010 17:09:35 CDT

The Department of Energy has released its 2009 Wind Technologies Market Report. The results say China is now the world’s fastest-growing wind energy market. Last year the United States added 10-gigawatts of wind capacity - 40-percent more than the previous year. But China captured 36-percent of the world’s new additions in wind capacity. Still China has less than 26-thousand cumulative megawatts of wind capacity - while the United States has 35-thousand megawatts of wind energy capacity.

The report says in the United States last year wind power accounted for 39-percent of all new power generating capacity. That’s down a bit from 2008. Texas led the way - installing nearly three-thousand megawatts alone.

In the report DOE says both the U.S. and China are exploring offshore wind options. The U.S. recently approved its first offshore wind farm - which could rapidly expand both nation's capacities to install new wind infrastructure. The report adds as two of the world's largest producers of greenhouse gasses and the two global powers the world is looking to for energy guidance - America and China should be fostering healthy competition when it comes to going green.
