A Step Toward Sequencing the Cotton Genome
Wed, 22 Sep 2010 17:58:18 CDT
Monsanto Comany and San Diego-based Illumina Inc have announced they've reached a key research milestone that could lead to the development of cotton crops with higher yields, better fiber quality and greater resistance to disease and pests. The two companies have sequenced a wild Peruvian cotton species and will donate the findings to the public. This step will help public and private researchers in their efforts to sequence the genome of American upland cotton.
American upland cotton accounts for more than 95-percent of U.S. production. The genome has been difficult to sequence and assemble because of its size and quantity of repetitive DNA. Monsanto Global Cotton Technology Lead Ty Vaughn says this announcement will bring everyone closer to assembling the cotton genetic puzzle.
