4-H National Youth Science Day Focused on Water

Mon, 04 Oct 2010 17:26:28 CDT

The third annual 4-H National Youth Science Day is Wednesday. Millions of youth around the country will become scientists - learning about carbon dioxide and discovering how we can reduce our environmental impact through this year’s experiment - 4-H2O. This year - students can go online to share their results and take “The Challenge.” According to the 4-H National Youth Science Day website - an online module will ask youth to use their new 4-H2O knowledge to calculate their carbon footprint and pledge to take steps to improve their local environment.

Not only will two randomly selected kids win a new Apple iPad - but the county with the highest online participation in each state will receive 500-dollars to support the implementation and promotion of 4-H science programs in their local community.

U.S. Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan is participating in this year’s experiment during a visit to Hearst Elementary School in Washington, D.C. More than 200 students will learn about the importance of water quality and its impact on the environment as they complete the three-tiered experiment to discover how to reduce their carbon footprint.

For more information about the 2010 National Youth Science Day and experiment - visit the 4-H website and click on the National Science Experiment logo at the bottom right of the page.
