House and Senate Ag Committees Likely To Have New Chairmen in January
Tue, 02 Nov 2010 3:09:47 CDT
It looks as if both the House and Senate Ag Committees should have new people at the helm come January. Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia Center for Politics sees potential gains for the GOP of about 55 House seats which will mean a Republican majority. If the Republicans, if fact, do take control of the House, Oklahoma's Frank Lucas is expected to become chairman of the House Ag Committee. Overall, half of the Democratic seats presentely held by members of the House Ag Committee are considered to be leaning Republican. That includes some well known names like Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota and Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota.
According to Sabato, Democrats may gain 8 Senate seats but that's not enough to swing control of that body of lawmakers. Senate Ag Committee chairman Blanch Lincoln is at greatest risk of losing here Senate seat. Michigan's Debbie Stabenow has been seen as the front-runner to replace Lincoln.
Key issues during the election campaign included Health Care Reform and the financial "bail out". But, not tackling issues such as tax breaks may have also been a problem for some incumbents. However, it is hoped the tax issues will be revisited during the "lame-duck" session. But like any election, one GOP party media consultant says there are going to be some surprises.
