Evidence Mounts That Government Should Do Economic Impact Analysis on Proposed GIPSA Rule
Tue, 16 Nov 2010 19:35:59 CST
The Chief Economist of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Gregg Doud, continues to scratch his head over the lack of an economic analysis by Uncle Sam on the proposed GIPSA Rule on how livestock are to be marketed. GIPSA Administrator Dudley Butler has defended the lack of an economic impact study by saying there would be limited impact, and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has defended the GIPSA decision during the public comment period.
However, there are now three studies paid for by those in the livestock business that will be impacted by the proposed rules- and they all conclude huge costs- direct and indirect- will result.
We talk with Gregg Doud about especially the Informa Economics study released this past week, showing a $1.5 billion dollar impact to the livestock business- looking at the three major species. That's our topic on today's beef Buzz.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the National Chicken Council released details of a study done for them by FarmEcon LLC, an agricultural economics consulting firm. This group looked at just the chicken meat industry- and concluded that the costs would approach a billion dollars over a five year period to this part of the livestock business alone.
