Fallin Choice for Secretary of Agriculture Praised by Farm Groups

Wed, 17 Nov 2010 7:20:02 CST

Fallin Choice for Secretary of Agriculture Praised by Farm Groups Oklahoma's two general farm organizations are supportive of the announcement earlier this week that Jim Reese is the choice of Governor Elect Mary Fallin to be her Secretary of Agriculture. Reese, who will serve in that role, as well as the President of the State Board of Agriculture and the head of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, will take over the position held in recent years by Terry Peach of Mooreland.

Oklahoma Farm Bureau issued the following statement from OFB President Mike Spradling:

“We respect and support Governor-elect Mary Fallin’s appointment of Jim Reese as agriculture secretary,” said Mike Spradling, Oklahoma Farm Bureau president.

“The governor-elect was fortunate to have a large pool of dedicated Oklahoma agriculture leaders to choose from, and we are looking forward to working with Jim,” Spradling said.

“We had a good working relationship with Jim when he was in the statehouse and when he was serving as FSA director,” Spradling said.

While serving in the state legislature, Reese received Farm Bureau’s Meritorious Service award, which is granted to lawmakers for their strong support of rural and agricultural issues.

Meanwhile, we talked Wednesday morning with the President of the American Farmers & Ranchers, Terry Detrick, who congratulated Reese for the appointment and was optimistic that they could work well with the new Secretary of Agriculture as well. Detrick and other leaders from AFR are wrapping up a brief trip to Washington to urge Congress to deal with the Death Tax (and other issues) during the Lame Duck Session.
