Japan to Use DNA Tests on Imported Beef

Japan is expected to begin using DNA tests next year to determine the country of origin of beef. Japan has faced a problem in recent years with imported beef being labeled as domestically produced. The Japanese government views DNA testing as a possible remedy that will address consumer concerns.

U.S. beef industry groups don’t view Tokyo’s move as a protectionist effort to curb imports. In a statement to Agri-Pulse, the U.S. Meat Export Federation says - it will monitor the issue to ensure that any DNA testing requirements - are implemented in a workable and practical manner.

A Kobe University research team tested the new method on 400 Japanese cows, 278 Australian cows and 107 American cows and was able to determine with 100 percent accuracy the origins of the animals. Australia and the United States are two of the biggest beef exporters to Japan.
