NCBA Opposes Food Safety Rider

Wed, 08 Dec 2010 17:15:47 CST

NCBA Opposes Food Safety Rider The House has added the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act as a rider to its continuing resolution to fund the federal government through September, 2011. In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader John Boehner, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association voiced its opposition to the move – saying the food safety bill should be considered only as a standalone bill.

NCBA Executive Director of Legislative Affairs Kristina Butts says, “Food safety knows no size. We are disappointed House leadership included it in the CR without allowing an up or down vote on a bill as - robust and sweeping,” as the food safety bill. She says, “We believe these issues deserve the due diligence of Congress.”

Specifically, NCBA is opposed to language offered by Senators John Tester and Kay Hagan exempting small food producers and processors from the legislation included in the Act. Butts says food safety policy should be based on sound science and applied to all food producers and processors regardless of size or proximity to the market.
