USDA May Be Drafting Coexistence Policy
Wed, 08 Dec 2010 17:20:19 CST
Agri-Pulse reports the Agriculture Department is drafting a comprehensive coexistence policy that it hopes will diffuse tensions between conventional, biotech and organic farmers. The proposal being developed by an internal USDA working group will address all phases of the crop and livestock supply chain production, merchandising, processing and transportation and include specific guidelines for all types of production.
According to Agri-Pulse, Many of the concepts under discussion appear to come from the National Organic Action Plan adopted by organic advocates earlier this year. The goal of the NOAP is to - establish organic as the foundation for food and agricultural production systems across the United States.
Max Holtzman, Secretary Vilsack's advisor on biotechnology policy, told representatives of the American Farm Bureau Federation, corn, cotton, rice, soybean and sugar beet growers that a compensation fund was one of many options under consideration. Beyond that, they say, he was not very forthcoming.
