Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns has outlined his goals for the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee as the 112th Congress begins. In addition to hearings about the reauthorization of the farm bill set to expire in 2012, Johanns stressed the importance of the committee's oversight responsibilities related to the Administration. He also outlined hearing ideas regarding new rules and regulations proposed by agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency that could be potentially harmful to American agriculture.
In his letter to Senators Debbie Stabenow and Pat Roberts. Johanns said, "This Administration has clearly demonstrated an inclination to unnecessarily regulate and over-burden our farmers and ranchers to a stifling degree, and it is the Committee's important duty to assert its role as representatives of our ag producers." Working together, Johanns said, "We can produce a farm bill and other policies that will help empower our farmers and ranchers to continue to lead the world in agriculture."
