Oklahoma CBB Member Bob Drake Concerned About Proposed Structural Changes in Cattlemen's Beef Board
Sat, 02 Apr 2011 17:29:31 CDT
As we arrived at the San Antonio Convention Center to report on the 2011 Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Convention and Trade Show- one of the first familiar faces we spotted was Oklahoma cattleman Bob Drake of Davis. Drake is a member of the Cattlemen's Beef Board and we talked with him about the controversy that became public this last week as the Executive Committee of the CBB proposed sweeping changes to the structure of the Cattlemen's Beef Board.
Drake is very concerned about these changes- and he and other CBB Board Members objected and asked that a full discussion take place on these concepts at the next scheduled meeting of the CBB board, which is in August in Florida.
On Thursday afternoon, word came via email to the CBB board that the Executive Committee had decided to pull back on the vote and bring it forward this coming August.
Click here for our story from this past Thursday of the move to back away from the email voting.
In the aftermath of these moves and countermoves- we talked with the former (and last) President of the National Cattlemen's Association about how these events unfolded- and his rationale for believing that if the Chairman of the Board, Tom Jones of Arkansas and his Executive Committee get their way- it could eventually lead to the demise of the Beef Checkoff in its present form.
Click on the LISTEN BAR below to hear our full conversation on this turmoil that bubbled up this past week within the body responsible for spending at least half of the Beef Checkoff. Our picture here is of Drake voting earlier this year during the CBB Board meeting held during the Cattle Industry Convention in Denver.
