Oklahoma Crop Report Consensus Predicts 2011 Wheat Crop of 67.65 Million Bushels
Wed, 04 May 2011 13:23:08 CDT
We tweeted "live" from the morning session of the Oklahoma Grain and Feed Association meeting that featured an assessment of the 2011 Oklahoma Wheat Crop. After all reports were in, grain elevator managers, extension specialists, farmers and others were invited to weigh in on a consensus number for the 2011 hard red winter wheat crop in the state, hit hard this year by very droughty conditions stretching back to last fall.
The consensus estimate for the 2011 Oklahoma crop is 67,650,000 bushels, which is based on 20.5 bushels per acre on 3 million acres to be harvested. After the report session was complete, we talked with OSU Grain Marketing economist Dr. Kim Anderson who indicated last week that he was expecting a seventy million bushel crop this year, with a possible value to the state's farm economy of just over a half billion dollars, based on a cash wheat price at harvest of approximately $7.80 per bushel. You can hear our conversation with Dr. Anderson by clicking on the LISTEN BAR below.
The sixty seven million bushel wheat crop is a major reduction from the 126 million bushel crop of a year ago in Oklahoma, although wheat prices that could be double that of wheat harvest of 2010 could ease the pain as long as you have at least some wheat to sell.
Here are the "tweets" that told the story of the reports on a region by region basis- it reflects what was said in the hour long session:
Mark Gregory-SW Area extension agronomist talking SW Oklahoma wheat crop- Mark predicts 631,000 acres and 8.86 million bushels, which figures out to be about 13 bushels per acre.
Chris Wright reporting on the southeastern quarter of Oklahoma. Wright told the group that as is normally the case- very limited wheat to be harvested- he anticipates 10,000 acres to be harvested with 30 bushels per acre predicted for a total of 300,000 bushels.
Brent Woolf was next as he reported on Northeastern Oklahoma. Brent says that his quarter of the state is a traditionally small area of wheat production. He says that for 2011 that there seems to be excellent prospects for the limited acreage to yield well. Woolf predicts NE Oklahoma will harvest 55,000 acres- 35 Bushels per acre to total 1.925 million bushels for that quarter of the state.
Rick Kochenower reports wheat prospects for the Oklahoma Panhandle as he says he believes that this is the lowest potential he has seen in his 13 years as extension specialist based out of Guymon. Kochenower says the Oklahoma Panhandle will likely harvest about 350,000 acres of wheat- yielding at 31 to 32 bushels peracre with a total output of 11 million bushels.
Tim Bartram of the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association reports West Central Oklahoma may harvest 484,000 acres, with an average yield just under 15 bushels per acre with production at 7.154 million bushels of wheat.
Avery Eeds with Wheeler Brothers of Kingfisher reports on Central Oklahoma wheat crop prospects- predicts 450,000 acres to be harvested- 18.4 bushels per acre and 8.28 million bushels.
Ronnie Turelock of Alva predicts 12.8 million bushels of wheat will be harvested in the 4 counties he reported on (the western half of North Central Oklahoma) at the Oklahoma Wheat Crop Report Session.
In the final regional report, Kim Metcalf of Pond Creek predicts the east half of North Central Oklahoma which are four of the traditionally highest producing counties in the state, will have a total production on 725,000 harvested acres at 25 bushels per acre with total production pegged at 18.355 million bushels of wheat.
