Western Kansas Wheat Still Has Potential- But Only With Adequate Rainfall
Thu, 05 May 2011 6:18:53 CDT
Day two of the Kansas Wheat Crop Tour included 264 stops by the scouts from Colby down to Liberal and then eastward to Wichita. Mike Schulte of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission was one of the scouts on the tour- and reports that the wheat between Scott City, Kansas and Liberal, Kansas was in better shape than he expected, but is still just hanging on, needing at least one more significant rain in order to have a chance to hit the yields predicted on the tour this week.
The average yield per acre for day two that was estimated by the scouts was 33.4 bushels per acre. That's down from the Day Two estimates of a year ago by three bushels per acre.
Part of the route that Schulte toured on Wednesday was from Liberal down into the northern tier of Oklahoma counties- going from Buffalo across into Woods County and then Alfalfa County. They saw one field just east of Burlington, Oklahoma of OK Bullet that they estimated would yield 63 bushels per acre- and everyone in that car agreed that was the best wheat they saw all day.
Mike Schulte provided us a recap of Day Two that we have for you in audio form- click on the LISTEN BAR below to hear his Day Two recap- and click here for the Day One summary we compiled from reports from Mike and Mark Hodges of Plains Grains.
