Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas Defends Funding for Flood Control Dam Rehab during House Ag Appropriations Debate

Wed, 15 Jun 2011 16:11:49 CDT

Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas Defends Funding for Flood Control Dam Rehab during House Ag Appropriations Debate The debate for the FY 2012 Ag Appropriations is underway once again on the floor of the US House. The first amendment offered on Wednesday afternoon was an attempt to zero out $15 million that would go to be a cost share for rural watershed dam rehabilitation. Congressman Paul Broun of Georgia offered the bill- and it brought Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas to the floor to argue against the elimination of these dollars. The 2008 Farm Law authorizes $165 million annually for this program- however the Obama Administration had no money proposed for this program- and $15 million was inserted during the Committee process to allow the most critical work on at risk dams to proceed.

Chairman Lucas argued successfully that this money should be left in place, as the work done on these watershed structures prevents major flood damage almost every year.

After Congressman Lucas made his arguments, a voice vote was taken and the amendment was defeated.
