In observance of World Environment Day, CropLife America joins CropLife International and its global federation to call on global leaders attending the G20 Meeting in Cannes, France, to increase investments in agricultural research and development. Farming challenges such as climate change, limited natural resources, and population growth can only be addressed through investment in modern agricultural innovations. Leading-edge agricultural technologies help preserve the environment, as well as drive economic development for farmers, local communities, and national governments.
"CropLife America joins with our global network of crop technology association colleagues on the occasion of World Environment Day to call attention to the dual role of our industry in serving farmers and consumers worldwide, contributing every day to expanding farm productivity and improving the environmental performance of agriculture," noted Jay Vroom, president and CEO of CropLife America. "Crop protection products have advanced considerably from their initial adoption, and that innovation continues as the companies that pioneer these solutions invest more than $250 million in research and development on average for each new compound brought to market."
As world leaders gather for G20 meetings, they face some of the most challenging hunger problems in the history of mankind. As the population increases and the demand for a better, more varied diet pressures the food supplies of today and tomorrow, technological answers to increasing crop yield and quality are vital to guaranteeing food security.
"We are extremely proud of the fantastic innovations the crop protection industry continues to offer as part of the hunger solution, and we stand ready to continue to work with authorities to do more," Vroom added. "Our global network of organizations, led by CropLife International, works every day to improve regulatory systems that ensure farmers receive these safe and necessary agricultural tools, that safe use training systems are supported, and that the protection of intellectual property to stir more innovation continues."
