Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Blows Past the Half Done Mark as Hot Dry Conditions Prevail

Wed, 08 Jun 2011 6:31:18 CDT

Oklahoma Wheat Harvest Blows Past the Half Done Mark as Hot Dry Conditions Prevail Wheat harvest continues to expand northward with the hot dry weather pattern that has dominated the southern Great Plains since before Memorial Day. The Oklahoma Grain and Feed Association provides us with a quick snapshot from a few elevator locations in central and northcentral Oklahoma:

Manchester area - Just started over the weekend. Yields look to be better than expected. Most test weights 59-62. Moisture is like it has been all year, (lacking)!!!!

Pond Creek area - We are blowing thru acres very quickly, over 50% complete unfortunately, the bushels just aren't there. Lots of acres in our area average mid 20's with the occasional, 35-40 and 10-12. TW is very good will average over 60.00, fm and dkg are better but is still an issue in some areas, we are still receiving some mixed grain.

Stillwater area - Still unsure about the size of our harvest. We have about 150,000 in the house at Perry, all good quality. Maybe 1/3 finished?

The Oklahoma Wheat Commission has also issued a report from multiple locations as of Tuesday afternoon- here is that report as picked up from their website.

The Kansas Wheat Alliance also reports active harvest in seven or eight Kansas counties, mostly right on the border with Oklahoma. Kari Nusz, manager of the Anthony Farmers Coop in Harper County says harvest has been underway since Friday and about 150,000 bushels have been taken in so far. Test weights average 63 pounds per bushel and yields have been as high as 40 bushels per acre. Nusz says farmers seem pleased with harvest overall, as it is better than expected. Overall, she expects to take in about 500,000 bushels, well below last year's 800,000 bushel harvest.
