House Ag Chairman Lucas tells USDA- Do the Economic Analysis AND Another Public Comment Period on GIPSA

He's a rancher from Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. He's also the Chairman of the House Ag Committee. Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas is one of those lawmakers in the middle between the USDA and it's agency, GIPSA, on one side and lots of unhappy constituents on the other side clamoring either for or against the controversial rule on the marketing of livestock that the Agency proposed one year ago this week.
The supporters of the GIPSA rule say it should have already been implemented as proposed and is desperately needed to protect independent livestock operators from packers and other livestock producers who want to control the market. Opponents of GIPSA claim it will roll back the hands of time in a bad way for the modern livestock industry- reversing in some cases and precenting in almost every case innovation in selling value added products that consumers want. Last week, the full US House went on record against the finalization of the proposed rule, as they denied funding after October first to USDA to do any further work on the GIPSA Rule. Congressman Lucas says he hopes that USDA gets the message- and assuming they finish the cost benefit analysis on the rule before October first- would then allow the industry to comment on that Analysis and whatever changes in the rule that USDA may be willing to offer.
