Oklahoma Wheat Harvest in Pictures- June 6, 2011- Our Latest Update
Tue, 07 Jun 2011 5:39:03 CDT
Stress from drought on the 2011 Oklahoma wheat crop has pushed harvest rapidly forward here in the early days of June, with the latest Oklahoma crop weather update showing that 45% of the harvest is now complete in the state- versus 10% by this point a year ago, and the five year average of 20%.
While many fields have simply not had enough rainfall or snowcover since last fall when it was planted and has either been declared a loss by crop insurance agents- or has yielded well below normal- there are fields that took the moisture received and have made good yields here in 2011.
The picture above and those below come from Oklahoma County- just south of I-40 on Council Road, close to the new location for PCOM's processing facility. The combine operator was not sure about the variety, but felt the yields were in the low 30s. The wheat that he was cutting with this Gleaner combine was short, but thick and had not been grazed.
We got one report from northcentral/northwest Oklahoma of some pretty good results on several fields. This producer writes "In NW Oklahoma a 100 acre field of Duster made over 44 bu/acre. Jackpot yields were in the mid 30's. A half-section NE of Enid made 41- mostly Doans. Wheat after full season milo was very poor- it was too dry, and the plants shut down early with one quarter section making 11 bushels per acre after milo.
"All of these fields were pastured by cattle, so add about 8 bu/acre to get total production for wheat and cattle."
