Oklahoma 4-H Soaring to New Heights With a Million Dollar Gift

The Honors Night at the 2011 Oklahoma 4-H Roundup on the campus of Oklahoma State University turned out to be a historic night for 4-H in the state of Oklahoma. During the evening, details were announced of the largest non-estate gift ever given to the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation- a million dollars by Terry Stowers, an attorney from Norman. According to Past President of the 4-H Foundation Rodd Moesel, the earnings of this gift will be used to fund 4-H travel scholarships & college education scholarships. The earnings of the money could provide forty to fifty $1,000 scholarships on an annual basis for Oklahoma 4-H members.
This year's State 4-H Roundup will be finishing up the annual conference on Friday morning, July 29 with the announcement of the 2011-2012 State Leadership Council Representatives. The three day State 4-H Roundup started on Wednesday, July 17 and featured a wide range of activites for the members participating.
This year's "Soaring to New Heights" themed conference provided diverse opportunities for 4-H members. The 914 members attending Roundup had the chance to participate in activites ranging from speech contests, Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom, to rain water harvesting, plus workshops focusing on social media, wildlife, and proper feed grains for livestock.
There was also a new contest this year for members interested in food science. The 4-H Food Showdown was culinary challenge where three member teams competed to create a dish while demonstrating their knowledge in foods and nutrition, kitchen safety, equipment and creativity in food preparation. Members competed at a district level to then compete at the state competition.
The Oklahoma 4-H program gave out $50,000 worth in scholarships and awards to members in recognition for their service work.
Whitney Dockrey, Shawnee, Okla., and Jenna Murray, Fletcher, Okla., were named as the two State 4-H Hall of Fame winners for 2011. Both were selected for their significant work in public speaking, leadership and citizenship areas of the 4-H program.
