Best Antidote for Drought- A Nice Hurricane

Mon, 18 Jul 2011 05:53:35 CDT

Best Antidote for Drought- A Nice Hurricane The dry weather that has been in place in some locations since last summer was a hot topic for Meterologist Travis Meyer as he addressed the summer meeting of US Wheat Associates on Sunday evening in downtown Tulsa. Meyer talked about 2011 and the weather extremes seen in Oklahoma that have been a microcosm of weather conditions nationally.

Among the extremes mentioned-

Extreme cold back in February when we saw lows drop to a record level with 31 degrees below recorded at Nowata.

Record Flood levels recorded on the Illinois River- almost two feet above the previous high.

Fires seen across much of Oklahoma this past spring.

Extreme tornados seen both at Joplin as well as the Central Oklahoma tornados around Piedmont that were actually slightly stronger.

Exceptional Drought that now covers over forty percent of the state, with all of Oklahoma now under some level of drought in the latest National Drought Monitor.

The extremely hot conditions that have gripped all of Oklahoma with almost daily heat advisories- Meyer compared 2011 to 1980 in terms of number of days above 100 degrees.

After his presentation to the US Wheat meeting, he talked with Ron Hays about current weather conditions- and his concern about the trends that suggest a return to a La Nina may be in the cards for this fall, which could extend drought conditions well into the fall and winter months that are ahead- very bad news for the 2012 winter wheat crop.

Meyer says perhaps the best solution in the near term for our south central US drought- a Hurricane coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. He says it will take a very significant event to dislodge and reverse the drought that has settled in across Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana.
